Get ready for the week ahead with these five things to know.

Monday, Jan. 21 is a federal holiday marking the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. In observance of the holiday, there will be no regular mail delivery and city offices at Ferndale City Hall will be closed. Ferndale Public Schools are also closed on Monday. Ferndale-based attorney Lisa J. Schmidt is hosting a discussion on gay marriage at 7 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 21 at the Ferndale Public Library. Ferndale Parking Rate Changes on Council Agenda and More This Week

Get ready for the week ahead in Ferndale with these five things to know.

Ferndale City Council will meet at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Ferndale City Hall. Included on council's agenda are possible parking rate changes. The city is currently working with the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority to modernize its parking system, which includes the new multi-space parking meter system which allows for flexibility in rates and payments. At Monday's meetings, council will consider new rates based on parking priority areas. The city's current parking rate is 50 cents per hour. The new recommended rate is $1 per hour for on-street parking, 75 cents an hour in most lots, 50 cents an hour in Lot#1, and $1 per hour in all lots after 7 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. I agree 100% with Easydude. Also, I could care less about spending money on new parking meters (they're going to do whatever they want anyway) just MAKE SURE they take quarters. Don't ask me to get out my smart phone, walk to a kiosk or use my credit card just because I need to run into Radio Shack for 15 minutes. This Week in Ferndale: School Board Meeting, Kindergarten Info Night and More

The Ferndale Board of Education will meet for its annual organizational meeting at 7 p.m. Monday, Jan. 7 at the Harding Administration Center. This will be the first meeting with newly-elected school board members Amy Butters, Jim O'Donnell, Raylon Leaks-May and Kevin Deegan-Krause. You can find the agenda online here. Adults ages 21 and older are invited to join in drop-in basketball and volleyball starting Monday, Jan. 7 at the Kulick Community Center. Rosie's Scaring for Caring is a contest going on now at Rosie O'Grady's in Ferndale where charities submit a scarecrow and customers can vote for the best one by putting a dollar in the bucket of the scarecrow they like best. All proceeds go to the charities. The Ferndale Golden Eagle Marching band has entered a scarecrow and is hoping to win $500 for the band. 5 Things to Know This Week in Ferndale

Get ready for the week ahead in Ferndale with these five things to know.

Head over to the Kulick Community Center this morning (and the third Monday of each month) for Messy Craft Monday. This class is free for those with a current Kids Corner or Romp and Stomp visit pass, which are available for purchase at the Kulick Center, or $10 for the class. Class meets in the Art Studio at 10:45 a.m. and is designed for children up to age 5. School Improvement Mondays - a new Ferndale Public Schools K-12 school improvement initiative - continues today at all of the district schools.
