Annual 'Mustache Turtleneck & Sweater Holiday Extravaganza' to be held Dec. 23 at the Magic Bag.
The community is invited to join in some holiday fun on Sunday night and help support an important cause. The 'Mustache, Turtleneck and Sweater Holiday Extravaganza' is an annual event put on by a group of friends on the night before Christmas Eve, said organizer M.G. Shapiro, of Ferndale. Tonight's event kicks off at 8 p.m. at the Magic Bag in Ferndale. Each year the group picks a charity and donates the proceeds from the event. This year, all of the proceeds will be donated to the United Way of Western Connecticut, which has established a fund to support the families and community of Newtown/Sandy Hook Elementary School. "I take enormous pride in this event as each year it is a true celebration of life," Shapiro said of the event. "…

60 Second Crush bid farewell next Friday at the Magic Bag in Ferndale; Punk-styled music proves perseverance after all, with 15 years of "rock 'n' roll adventures" remembered fondly by the fierce five-some.
Most things as loud, fast and aggressive as local quintet 60 Second Crush don’t last this long. These mere 60 seconds have lasted almost 15 years. Defying that classic (/clichéd) narrative of the burning-out (/self-desctructive) rock band, these amped guitar-slung agitators of alt-metal melee substantially staked their claim in the Michigan music scene upon countless local stages for more than a decade. [Find 60 Second Crush on ReverbNation & Facebook] Fostering, honing and then unleashing their own blend of punk, heavy metal and rock across three full-length albums, garnering them two Detroit Music Awards and securing them as favorite fiery entries on numerous major music festivals. This month, the band brings their own curtain down, on …

Participants in the annual Woodward Dream Cruise slogan contest at The Magic Bag in Ferndale have until noon Wednesday to submit their best snarky saying about the classic car parade for a chance to see their words on the venue's marquee and win a ticket prize pack. The contest is intended to give residents and business owners along the route a way to voice their frustrations with the Saturday event that is expected to attract 1.5 million visitors to a 16-mile stretch of Woodward Avenue including Ferndale, Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Berkley, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. Magic Bag owner Jeremy Haberman said that, over the years, the venue has tried a variety of ways to capitalize on the event – including booking Bo Diddley; renting …

Plus, local "space-funk" trio will release their long-awaited second album at Ferndale's Magic Bag on Friday.
It's the one thing that's nice about "bands in the summertime," says Ferndale-based musician Frank Lee: "...basements." Havens from the heat, the typical dwelling place of rock bands can be cool respites from the debilitating humidity of long sun-singed days with seemingly ever-increasing temperatures. A cool place. A sound-proof space. It's also a place of rejuvenation, creatively and somewhat spiritually. A laboratory, a think-tank, sometimes a gymnasium; a private domain in which to freak out without worry or self-doubt. For Lee, who plays in local trio JFn'K, and for other Ferndalians like Johnny Headband's singer/keyboardist Chad Thompson, basements can also be recording studios. JFn'K will be releasing a special pair of cover songs …

This next installment in my local music column spins a new album from Ferndale's Fawn, checks in with Chris Johnston of the Woodward Avenue Brewers and looks ahead to new music from The Blueflowers.
First things first: A couple of album reviews from local bands: The Blueflowers - Stealing The Moon The Blueflowers have this swooning, twanged-out, heart-thumping sound, the kind of bittersweet balladry that stops bar chatter, turns heads, tames savage beasts and dims the party lights for a rustling, reverb-soaked rumination. You sip this kinda sound, slow, let it warm you up. It breathes, it sways, it stirs... The trilling vibrato of those airy/achy vocals, the exquisite wheeze and rumble of organs under shimmering surfy guitars, the hay-fluttered breeze of acoustic strums and the distant rolling thunder of bass and drums all around you. This is an album that seems to open things up, push walls away, slide sheets of stars across your …

Want to attract people to Woodward Avenue, lower the price of gas to what is was in 1962 for one day. Just one day, long before we had problems with Iran, Syria, Egypt. Pakistan and Afghanistan.   more ›
