Neighborhood group looks to discuss growth, finalize geographical boundaries.

A meeting of the Dales Neighborhood group will be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9 at the Digital Learning Center, located at 427 Allen Street. The group will discuss how to grow, finalize its geographical boundaries, confirm its neighborhood group name and more, according to the Facebook event page. The idea of organizing the neighborhood group was first discussed at a Nov. 2012 meeting that Dales residents initiated with the school district to discuss concerns about the Digital Learning Center. They held a second meeting on the topic in December. Safety Concerns, School Changes Discussed at Digital Learning Center Neighborhood Meeting

Residents of the Dales neighborhood met with school officials for a follow-up meeting on Wednesday at the Digital Learning Center.

Residents of the Dales neighborhood met with school officials Wednesday night to continue a conversation started last month focusing on concerns over the Digital Learning Center. The public forum was held at the Ferndale school at 427 Allen - formerly known as the Taft Education Center but which became the DLC this fall - and provided an overview of concerns expressed at the last meeting, an update on some recent changes at the school and an opportunity for residents to share additional comments. The first meeting, held Nov. 15, was initiated by neighbors - including Ferndale City Council member Melanie Piana - who have had concerns over recent criminal activity that happened outside of the school. Last December, a student was shot in the …

Ferndale Residents Discuss Crime, Neighborhood Group at Digital Learning Center Meeting

A forum for the Dales neighborhood was held at the former Taft Education Center Thursday evening.

More than 50 residents of the Dales neighborhood, along with city and school officials, packed the media library at the Digital Learning Center Thursday evening for a meeting about the school. Last December, a student was shot in the leg outside the school in what police called a "robbery gone bad." This past October, several students were arrested after a fight outside the school. A gang-related fight was reported the following week. The Digital Learning Center is an alternative high school that took over the building at the start of the 2012-2013 …

I am sure the d.e.a is involved...it's gone pretty far in the system. Neither department is really as involved as they should be. I bet it has something to do with the guilty's Ferndale status.   more ›

Neighbors to Discuss Digital Learning Center at Thursday Meeting

Residents in The Dales are invited to a meeting Thursday evening with the Ferndale police chief and school district superintendent.

A neighborhood meeting will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 to discuss changes at the Taft Education Center. The event will be held at Taft - home of the new Digital Learning Center, an alternative high school that opened this year offering students an online-based curriculum with support from academic case managers. The meeting on Thursday will give residents in the Dales neighborhood a chance to meet their neighbors, learn about recent changes at the center and voice any concerns they may have. The meeting will include Ferndale Public Schools Superintendent Gary Meier, Ferndale Police Chief Tim Collins and Ferndale school board members. "Academic case managers"? Are actual teachers involved? It would seem to me that alternative high school students might require more time with experienced teachers, not less. "Academic case managers" sound more akin to social workers or probation officers.   more ›
