Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak is offering a spring Silver Linings Program, an eight-week wellness program, for women who are at high risk for cancer. “This special program is for women who have a genetic mutation, such as being BRCA positive, or a very strong family history of cancer,” explains Ruth Lerman, M.D., facilitator, Silver Linings and Beaumont breast cancer specialist. “Regardless of whether or not these women have had cancer, all those at risk are welcome.” Silver Linings is free to participants. Researchers to study biomarkers for early detection of colorectal cancer.
Researchers at Beaumont Health System are seeking volunteers for a colon cancer prevention study. Participants must have a colonoscopy in the next four months. This National Cancer Institute study is looking at the nature of colorectal cancer and trying to develop improved methods to diagnose and treat it. “The purpose of this nationwide study is to determine whether urine, stool or blood can be used to find colorectal cancer as early or earlier than a colonoscopy,” explains Harry Wasvary, M.D., director, Colorectal Multidisciplinary Tumor Clinic, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and the site’s principal investigator. “We want to use these samples to learn about specific proteins or genes, also called biomarkers. Mitchell Cappell, M.D., Ph.D., chief, Gastroenterology, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak and professor, Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, has been selected as one of the seven physicians on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Gastrointestinal Drugs Advisory Committee. Genetic testing can help determine a person’s risk for developing certain cancers. Identifying cancer genes, the presence of BRCA 1and 2 mutations, is the first step. This testing allows the implementation of risk-reducing interventions: more frequent screening, surgical prevention and chemoprevention. For patients and families at risk for hereditary breast and ovarian cancer due to BRCA mutations, the information gained from genetic testing not only provides answers, but raises questions, too.
