Groundhog Still Wrong: Winter Storm Possible This Week

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch from Tuesday afternoon through late Tuesday night for Ferndale, and Metro Detroit.

Ferndale is under a winter storm watch starting Tuesday afternoon for a possible winter storm that could dump 6 inches of snow on the city. The National Weather Service issued the watch for Tuesday afternoon through Tuesday night for a storm that could bring 6 inches, or more, of heavy wet snow to the area. While the watch has been issued, it could still be modified as "there is still some uncertainty as to the overall track of this storm system," the National Weather Service wrote in an advisory. As we prepare for another storm remember that Michigan's Official Groundhog, Woody, and Punxsutawney Phil in Pennsylvania, both predicted an early spring.

Why Shovel When it Will Be Nearly 60 Degrees Tuesday?

The ice and snow that caused hundreds of school closures Monday throughout southeast Michigan soon will be a mere memory, but not for long!

The week got off to a slick, sloppy start in southeast Michigan, but those who don't relish shoveling snow and scraping ice are in luck: Temperatures are expected to approach 60 degrees Tuesday. The area, including Ferndale, will have swung from being under a winter weather advisory Sunday to experiencing springlike temperatures and rain showers over the course of just two days, according to the National Weather Service. The mix of snow and freezing rain that began Sunday and lasted overnight in Monday morning forced hundreds of school districts in the area to close. However, the high Monday was expected to hit 47 degrees, according to the NWS. The forecasting agency says temperatures will continue increasing to a high of 57 degrees, with …

Less Snow Than Expected, but Winter Storm Warning Continues

Two to five inches of snow is still possible for southeast Michigan today, forecast says.

Update 8 a.m.: Up to six inches of snow was expected by noon today, but a report from the National Weather Service says two to five inches is now more realistic for southeast Michigan. The storm system tracked slightly farther to the north than previously forecasted, the NWS reports. The result is heavier snow now expected north of M-59 and about two to five inches of snow possible for Ferndale and the rest of Metro Detroit. Warmer air surging into the area may also cause rain and sleet to mix in some areas, which we saw this morning. Snow may be heavy at times, esspecially through 1 p.m., and a winter storm warning will remain in effect until 7 p.m. today. The weather service warns that roads may become hazardous. POLL: Are You Glad or Sad Winter is Wimpy So Far?

Halfway through the season, we've had little snowfall and averaged 30 degrees.

Show of hands: Who went out without gloves this week or rode with a car window open? You're not alone. January just went out like a lamb, a two-months-early calendar twist that's unusual here. So is an average Metro Detroit winter temperature of 30.7 degrees, six weeks into the season, and snowfall barely above nine inches – compared to nearly 18 inches in January 2011. "It is surprising," National Weather Service meteorologist said this week from the monitoring station at White Lake. It recorded a Tuesday reading of 56 degrees and forecasts high temperatures of 40-44 degrees through Monday. In Rochester, unseasonal weather won’t stop a Snow Daze benefit for the Animal Care Network this Saturday afternoon. "We plan to host our annual Snow …

I'm loving it so far. I almost bought a snowmobile at the beginning of winter. I'm glad I held off. The snowblower is still sitting there unused. We were able to do some outdoor work at the cottage that I thought I'd have to wait for spring to do. I've tilled up a portion of my backyard twice to get it ready for new grass seed. This is the first time in my fifty some years that I can remember a …   more ›
