After Quarter Century in Brighton, Beloved Children’s Shop Closes Doors
If you’ve been on Main Street in the last few weeks, you’ve seen the signs: Next Generation is going out of business.
When owner Lynne Karty opened Next Generation: A Childrens Store in 1985, her goal was to compete with similar stores by offering deep discounts on quality merchandise. “All lot of people think it’s a resale shop, but all of the merchandise is brand new and brand name,” Karty said. In order to provide off-price items, Karty purchased large volumes of stock from vendors. Her plan worked—for a while. Even though Karty didn’t directly mention Michigan’s poor economy, she hinted that it is to blame for the store’s downturn. “It’s been more difficult to maintain our numbers in the last few years,” she said.
