First-year coach Mike Kuzniar called it an “incredible victory" on Saturday when the Ferndale High School "Eagles" Women's Varsity Soccer Team clinched the MHSAA District Title over the Hazel Park Vikings in a 5-0 shutout.
The Ferndale High School "Eagles" Women's Varsity Soccer Team shutout Hazel Park 5-0 on Saturday at Warren Fitzgerald to bring the school its first ever district championship. First-year coach Mike Kuzniar called it an “incredible victory.” The Eagles were tested early against a Vikings, but eventually Lexie Brisson-Fast broke through with two first half goals to give her team an advantage. Molly Breen-Bondie would add a goal before halftime to put Ferndale firmly in control. “The first 20 minutes, they played really well,” Kuzniar said. “They were very organized, I don’t know if it was a little bit of nerves on our part, but they’ve improved over the season, but finally we were able to break them at about the 20 minute mark. * home team in all CAPS Andover over ST. CLAIR LAKESHORE, 10-4 Andover rallied to beat St. Clair Lakeshore on the road Friday night 10-4. Lakeshore score all four of its runs in the bottom of the third. The Barons stormed back with three runs in the fourth, five in the sixth and two insurance runs in the seventh. Zach Wolfe struck out four batters over the first three innings. Truman Lorick pitched three scoreless innings in relieve and Gabe Berman struck out the side in the seventh. Myron Butler had two hits and two RBIs. Emerson Misch went 3-for-5 with a walk and an RBI. Gabe Berman hit a homerun. Berkley soccer wins, Troy lacrosse beats Walled Lake Northern 13-6.
* home team in all CAPS Bloomfield Hills Lahser over TROY, 2-1 Charlie Dauch was Charlie clutch Friday night for the Bloomfield Hills Lahser High School varsity baseball team. In the fifth inning, Zach Tornow led off the inning with a hit. Dauch came to the plate and belted an RBI double to break a 1-1 tie. Reliever Neal Krentz pitched a scoreless sixth and seventh to secure the win. Krentz closed down a Colts rally in the fifth by forcing a groundout and getting a strikeout. He also had an RBI double in the top of the first. Krentz combined with starter Patrick Monahan and Jack Corbell to limit Troy to only three hits in the game. Valente went the distance in a 2-0 win over the Troy High School varsity baseball team on Friday in an Oakland Activities Association Blue division game. The senior only allowed three-hits over seven shutout innings and finished the game with 10 strikeouts. Lexie Brisson-Fast is off to an incredible start with 15 goals in nine games. She has more than 70 career goals, which is already a school record. She’ll be breaking her own record a few more times this season. Kelsey Wilson signed a national letter of intent to play volleyball at Akron University in the fall, but coach Kuznair thinks that scholarship could’ve easily been for soccer. Eagles' starters score five goals in the first 15 minutes of Tuesday's game, giving the bench a lot of playing time.
The Ferndale High School varsity girls soccer team looked like it wanted to get home for the Red Wings game Tuesday night. In the second half, the Eagles ended the game early by mercy rule with about 30 minutes left on the clock when they went up 8-0 over Pontiac. “We did everything we needed to do,” coach Mike Kuznair said. Ferndale’s starters scored five goals in the first 15 minutes of the game. Kuznair went to his bench and had his subs play the rest of the half. The starters came back in to start the second half and needed only 10 minutes to add three more goals. Lexi Brisson-Fast scored four times to push her season total to 15. The United States' dramatic run through the 2011 Women’s World Cup will come to an end in the finals today against Japan in Frankfurt, Germany. ESPN is airing the 2:45 p.m. game and will start its pregame coverage at 2 p.m. Win or loss, the United States has generated a lot of positive buzz during its tournament run and a lot of interest in women’s soccer. That’s a good thing for local soccer camps and teams, according to area coaches. “I do believe that it affects the younger girls, ages 6-10, that may be seeing the game for the very first time and seeing the excitement that the games and athletes are creating,” Ferndale boy's and girl's varsity soccer coach Steven Motter said.
