Ferndale Declares Snow Emergency

Snow emergency in effect from 8:30 p.m. Tuesday until 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Ferndale has declared a snow emergency from 8:30 p.m. Tuesday night through 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to Ferndale water system supervisor Dan Harper. Any person whose vehicle is parked on a city street during a snow emergency may be ticketed, fined or have his/her vehicle impounded. A special parking permit may be issued by the Department of Public Works for any residential home that does not have a driveway. A maximum of two parking permits may be issued per such home. Ferndale Declares Snow Emergency on Friday

"Our DPW crews are making an effort to scrape and plow all residential streets before temperatures drop below 20 degrees," said DPW director Loyd Cureton.

As of 8:30 a.m. this morning, Loyd Cureton, Director of the Ferndale Department of Public Works (DPW) has declared a snow emergency. “Our DPW crews are making an effort to scrape and plow all residential streets before temperatures drop below 20 degrees," Cureton said. "Otherwise the snow and slush will turn to hard packed ice, and salt will be much less effective at those temperatures”. Once a snow emergency is declared, it remains in effect until city streets are clear curb-to-curb, or until the Director of Public Works cancels it. Snow Emergency Declared in Ferndale

Vehicles are to remain off the streets until plow trucks have gone through the area.

Ferndale is one of many communities in the area that has declared a snow emergency as of Wednesday evening, according to a list at clickondetroit.com. Parking on city streets is prohibited during a snow emergency, and vehicles parked on the street may be ticketed. A snow emergency is declared when four or more inches has accumulated in one hour or more, according to the city's web site. A snow emergency remains in effect until your street is clear curb-to-curb, or until the Director of Public Services cancels it. Residents who don't have a driveway can obtain a permit to park on the street by contacting the Ferndale Department of Public Works at 248-546-2519. Winter Storm Watch: 6 Inches of Snow or More Expected by Noon Friday

Ferndale Police Chief Tim Collins reminds residents to drive safely if they must be on the roads, clear sidewalks and move cars into driveways.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for all of southeast Michigan, with predictions of as much as half a foot of snow by Friday at noon. According to the alert, a strengthening low pressure system is expected to move into the area Thursday evening, bringing with it a mix of rain and snow that will change over to all snow Thursday night. Snowfall accumulation of 6 inches or more is possible for portions of southeast Michigan by early Friday afternoon, the report says. Drivers can expect snow-covered and slippery roads Thursday night and Friday morning, with difficult travel conditions during the Friday morning commute.
