Just what is Small Business Saturday and why should you support the event in Ferndale?
Big name national retailers take the spotlight on Black Friday as their deep price cuts pull in shoppers in droves. What about those mom-and-pop businesses all over Ferndale that are the backbone of America’s economy? Just when do they get their day? That’s basically the question asked back in 2010, when the concept of Small Business Saturday was born. Small Business Saturday is “a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities,” the U.S. Small Business Administration explains on its website. American Express gets the credit for founding the shopping holiday, which got its official start on Nov. 27, 2010, according to the Small Business Saturday Facebook page. Celebrating its third year on Nov. 24, the …

Jarred Gild at Western Market offers recommendations on wines to consider for your Thanksgiving dinner.
What's the best wine to go with Thanksgiving dinner? We asked that question of Jarred Gild, who you might know as the "wine guy" at Western Market in Ferndale. (Read more about him here!) He gave us some tips on choosing a wine to serve (or bring as a gift) for the holiday, and five specific suggestions to make your shopping trip even easier. 1. Chateau Cariziere Muscadet: This light, dry white wine has "a good crispness" and is organically grown. "It's what a Pinot Grigio is supposed to be," Gild says. Price: $12.99. 2. Lini Labrusca Rosato: This is a dry, savory wine that will pair well with Thanksgiving dinner. It's "not your mom's labrusca," Gild says. Price: $14.99. 3. Maison Angelot Bugey Gamay: This light, bright wine has a high …

The second annual event is creating buzz across the nation, and right here in Ferndale.
With Black Friday ending, it’s time for mom-and-pop stores to have a chance in the spotlight during the second annual Small Business Saturday event. Operating under the ‘Buy Local’ approach, stores in Ferndale have taken to promoting the event, through social media and windows signs. Advertising discounts, door busters and new products, the word about Small Business Saturday is spreading, and fast. “Last year, we didn’t really know about it; we were busy [at the store] but just the regular after Thanksgiving sort of busy,” said Emily Murray, owner of Modern Natural Baby. “I don’t think it was publicized at all as much as it is this year and we expect to be a lot busier because we’re seeing a lot of advertisements, we’re also doing our own …

This seasonal greeting comes from hometown merchants: Don't be in thrall to the mall. They're spreading the word via social media and window signs with help from American Express, organizer of the second annual Small Business Saturday on Nov. 26. The credit card issuer promotes a nationwide "day dedicated to supporting small businesses on one of the busiest shopping weekends," it explains online. "We’re asking millions of Americans to 'shop small' at their favorite local stores and help fuel the economy. When we all shop small, it will be huge." The firm puts money where its promotion is by offering a one-time $25 rebate to shoppers spending at least $25 at a small business after registering their credit card here. Any non-franchised, …
