Tonight: Ferndale Reads Book Party at the Emory

Part of the Ferndale Public Library's community-wide reading event. Meet up at 7:30 p.m. to discuss Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut.

The Ferndale Public Library and The Emory are proud to present The Ferndale Book Party. This group, part of our numerous specialty-Book Clubs, meets every other month at 7:30 p.m. to discuss the books you've been reading! Don’t all the best conversations happen in bars, anyway?? 'Book Parties' often cover a wide range of titles, from cutting edge innovators of Fiction to some of the tried and true classics that maybe some of us just haven't gotten around to, yet. THIS MONTH, however, Book Parties is being taken over by our month-long Ferndale Reads event, spotlighting Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five.  This is it! This is the wrap up, we hope you were able to finish your copy (Circulation Staffers have been handing them out, free to own…

Ferndale Reads Spotlight: An Interview with Dr. Gregory Sumner - Vonnegut Biographer

Part 2 (of 3): U-D history professor and published author/biographer discusses the iconic writer as a "broken-hearted American dreamer."

"What we love in our books are the depths of many marvelous moments seen all at one time." -Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five (Chapter 5) Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut is this year’s Ferndale Reads book - which the Ferndale Public Library is encouraging everyone in Ferndale to read this March... Click here for a schedule of special Ferndale-Reads Events. This year’s keynote speech will feature local Ferndale resident and author, Gregory Sumner. Ferndale Reads Spotlight: Slaughterhouse-Five, Kurt Vonnegut and Dr. Gregory Sumner - Part 1

I look back (and forward) on my "Journey" through Kurt Vonnegut's Life and Novels - inspired by local author and U-D Professor Gregory Sumner's new book and by our FERNDALE READS Community Reading Event.

I've heard some music in the works of Kurt Vonnegut...  In. Out. Perspective altered. That was Vonnegut. One word: Resonant. One (further) superfluous word: succinct. Whatever it was, Kurt Vonnegut struck it; whatever it wasn’t, Kurt Vonnegut found a way to say it. "What we love in our books are the depths of many marvelous moments seen all at one time." -Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse-Five, (Chapter 5) Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut is this year’s Ferndale Reads book - which FPL is encouraging everyone in Ferndale to read this March... I love your description of Vonnegut's writing style. I discovered him late in my life and deplore the years I missed out on his wit and insight. I've also read Sumner's "Unstuck in Time" and highly recommend it. Wish I could be in Ferndale in March to hear his presentation!   more ›

Ferndale Library Recommends: Dar's Power List

Ferndale Librarian Darlene Hellenberg breaks it down to the BIGGEST, BEST books of her life... No easy task, if you know her at all. Here's some essentials!

* Dar's a marvel. I don't know how she's able to rattle off such proper, on-the-nose picks for each person who might be looking for what to read next - and still keep her brain storming up new programming ideas to engage the community - like, say, a city-wide book club we call Ferndale Reads.  Anyway, when I wanna talk-books, I talk to FPL Reference Librarian Darlene Hellenberg. These are scenes struck from some dorked-out devotee's rap session ala- High Fidelity or some idyllic Shop Around The Corner where we share possible Best-Of listings of titles and authors.  We've never zeroed-in on just-WHAT-a finalized list, an all-time-Best-Of- might look like...  But this week, even amid her preparations for kicking-off Ferndale Reads 2013 (…
