WITH VIDEO: More Than 1,000 Protest Wisconsin Governor's Appearance in Troy

Teachers, union members and others chanted, marched and yelled at people arriving for a Republican dinner Tuesday at the San Marino Club, where Gov. Scott Walker of Wisconsin was to be a speaker.

More than 1,000 protesters chanted, marched and yelled as attendees arrived Tuesday evening for a Republican dinner at the San Marino Club in Troy. The 9th Congressional District Republican committee's Southeast Michigan Ronald Reagan Memorial Dinner 2012 was the event, and Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's appearance there was the draw for protesters. The crowd, estimated by Troy police to have reached about 1,300 people at one point, chanted "What do we want?" and an answering "Justice!" and "When do we want it?" "Now!" The protests, which started about 5 p.m. in advance of the 7 p.m. dinner program, stretched a whole block of Big Beaver Road. The Michigan chapter of the National Action Network headed by the Rev. Oakland University is the site of the next debate for the Republican presidential candidates.

The Republican presidential hopefuls, along with the pundits, the strategists, the media and, more than likely, a few protestors, will be headed to our area of the national political world on Nov. 9, the day after Election Day. It will be the ninth debate for the GOP candidates. Here's what you need to know right now about the event. When and where: The national debate, with the tagline "Your Money, Your Vote," is planned for 8-10 p.m. Nov. 9; that's the day after Election Day. The Livonia congressman announced his presidential campaign and played guitar at the Whitmore Lake festival Saturday.

U.S. Rep Thaddeus McCotter (R-Livonia) made his message loud and clear Saturday when he announced he was seeking a bid for the White House. The congressman announced before a crowd of a few hundred people Saturday that he is in the race for president of the United States — then brought out his American flag-themed guitar to play some bluesy rock music at the Freedom Festival at Whitmore Lake, sponsored by conservative talk radio station WAAM-AM (1600).
