Check out public art, a food truck rally and more as part of "Third Thursday" tonight in downtown Ferndale.
Thank goodness it's ... Thursday? As part of the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority's "Third Thursdays" initiative, you'll find public art activities, food trucks and more tonight in downtown Ferndale. Tonight's activities focus on what's "Hangin' in Ferndale," with tours offered of the six masterpieces currently on loan from the Detroit Institute of Arts Inside/Out program. The reproductions will be in town through the end of September. A DIA-docent guided tour of the six works will begin at 7:30 p.m. in front of Affirmations. You can also check out the monthly Metro Detroit Street Eats food truck rally held in the alley adjacent to the Rust Belt Market, and many downtown stores will be open late for shopping. Here are all the …

"This is the point," Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter said of the city's most-talked-about public art sculpture. "How boring would it be if we all had the same opinions and liked the same things?"
Don't knock the big red ram. Or actually, go right ahead. It's fine either way, say leaders of the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority, who have been working hard over the past several months to bring more public art to the city. The red ram and 10 other sculptures recently intalled throughout town are part of the city's ARTWN initiative to add and showcase public art. Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter asked for a show of hands of who likes the red ram on Thursday evening during the initiative's big event held at the Rust Belt Market (see a photo gallery from the event here). While many guests at the event raised a hand in support of the ram, the mayor wasn't ashamed to admit that he isn't necessarily among the fans of the bright red …
It was a "black tie and sneakers" event on Thursday evening as residents explored the city's 11 public art sculptures as part of the ARTWN initiative.
City leaders, business owners, artists and residents from across the area joined to support public art on Thursday evening at the Rust Belt Market for "ARTWN–The Event, Small Plates and Big Art." The event, held as part of the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority's ARTWN initiative, let residents explore and celebrate the 11-piece public art installation known as "ARTWN–The Exhibit." The event included guided sculpture tours, small plate offerings donated by local businesses, a silent auction and live music from the Nighthawks Jazz Orchestra. The unveiling of the 11th ARTWN sculpture, which is located outside the Rust Belt, was also featured. Cristina Sheppard-Decius, the DDA's executive director, spoke at the event and said public art …

The 11-piece installation is part of the Ferndale DDA's ARTWN initiative. What do you think of the new sculptures?
You've probably noticed at least a few of the new sculptures that have been popping up around town over the past week or so. The pieces - among them a bright red ram and a sculptural rendition of a flamenco dancer - are part of an 11-piece public art installation included in the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority's ARTWN initiative to add and showcase public art. "ARTWN - The Exhibit" is sponsored by MotorCity Casino Hotel and the Ferndale DDA, with additional support from individual sculpture sponsors. New sculptures have been installed almost daily over the past several days, with the final piece being unveiled on June 28 at an official launch party for the two-year installation. "ARTWN - The Event, Small Plates and Big Art," will …
