President Barack Obama was sworn in today for a second term in office. The day was historic in that Obama is one of just a handful of men who have been re-elected to lead the United States. But also that his swearing in fell on the annual celebration of Martin Luther King Jr's birthday and in the 50th anniversary year of King's March on Washington to deliver the "I Have a Dream" speech. Today's festivities included a 19-minute speech from the president in which he gave a shout out to southeast Michigan when he said, "Our journey is not complete until all our children from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherised, and always safe from harm." The Presidential Inauguration takes place Monday, Jan. 21, in Washington, D.C. The week of festivities will include the Presidential Swearing-in Ceremony, Inaugural Address, Inaugural Parade and numerous inaugural balls and galas honoring President Barack Obama for his second term. In our first Blue Mitten survey, most respondents say they agree that President Barack Obama's support for the 2009 auto bailout will help him in Michigan in the November election.
Democratic Michigan insiders said President Barack Obama’s auto bailout will help his chances in the state in the November election: that’s the finding of this week’s inaugural Blue Mitten survey of influential Democrats. Twenty-nine Democrats from the southeastern Michigan area were asked using an automated survey tool what they thought about how the auto bailout will affect Obama’s standing among Democrats and independents in Michigan. Eighteen responses were collected. All of the respondents said they agree or somewhat agree the bailout will help Obama win over Democrats in Michigan. 'We hope more of our straight allies will do the same,' Affirmations program director says of the president's statement on same-sex marriage.
It was a normal day at Affirmations in Ferndale on Wednesday afternoon when the LGBT community center got word of some major news: President Barack Obama had just announced his support for same-sex marriages. "We were all in the middle of our work day here doing what we're doing on an everyday basis. All of a sudden everybody was getting Facebook notices and texts about Obama making the statement," said Johnny Jenkins, Jr., director of programs at Affirmations. One of the state's high-ranking Democrats says he won't be voting in today's primary.
Michigan Congressman Gary Peters (D-9th District) won't be voting in today's Democratic primary election. Neither will Farmington Hills Mayor Barry Brickner. The two elected officials say there's no reason for them to go to the polls today, because Democrats will be choosing their candidate – President Barack Obama – in statewide caucuses on May 5. And even those won't offer much action. "There's only one person running, so it's going to be a real quickie," Brickner said. Michigan Democratic Party officials passed a resolution earlier this month that allows Democrats to vote in the primary and at their caucuses.
