After high winds wreaked havoc in September, the city will not receive state's help with costs.
Ferndale has been denied its request for state emergency funds to assist in the cleanup from a severe storm Labor Day weekend. Winds of up 70 mph storm flew through the area Sept. 3, knocking down trees and electrical lines, causing severe damage and leaving thousands without power for days. City officials estimated storm damage of around $100,000. The incident prompted Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter to declare a state of emergency and ask the state to help offset some of the cost. If approved, the city could have received up to $30,000. “We were told that there were no lingering threats to health and safety,” Ferndale City Manager April McGrath said. Coulter worries about the effect on the city's resources. "I'm disappointed that we didn't …

Utility officials were at Ferndale City Hall to field questions, complaints and concerns from the community it services.
Frustrations are running deep with DTE Energy and its estimates of when power might be back on in Ferndale and the surrounding areas after an evening storm ripped through the area Saturday evening. "Is there any hope?" Michael Kidder, a Royal Oak resident, asked the DTE engineers who were at Ferndale's City Hall 4-7 p.m. Wednesday to field questions from the community. About 10 people showed up throughout the day, according to DTE. "You guys keep telling us different things. Filed under FWIW: I've talked with 5 people today who recieved phone calls from DTE asking their opinion about the service and what happened yesterday. When all 5 of them started to talk about how unsatisfied they were with the company and the amount of outages within the past year, the DTE rep immediately hung up on them. Something needs to be done, right now. Where is Covey on this? I suggest …   more ›
