Ferndale OKs Continued Shared Fire Services Contract with Pleasant Ridge

Council members unanimously approve the agreement, saying they are glad to maintain the 90-year relationship.

Ferndale City Council voted unanimously Monday night to approve the continuation of a contract with Pleasant Ridge for shared fire and ambulance services. Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter said he is “very happy” the city will continue its 90-year relationship with Pleasant Ridge and thanked city staff for their hard work on the contract. "It was always our hope that they would stay with Ferndale and I'm delighted that they did," Coulter said after the meeting. The total cost to Pleasant Ridge in 2012 was $265,000. Starting in 2014, the cost will be $250,000 with a rate increase based on the Inflationary Rate Multiplier, which is set by the state. "Nobody took a big hit," Ferndale council member Mike Lenon said. On June 15, Pleasant Ridge …

Officials will consider a request to approve the continuation of a contract with Pleasant Ridge for shared fire and ambulance services. The Pleasant Ridge City Commission will vote on the agreement Tuesday.

Ferndale City Council will vote Monday on a request to approve the continuation of a contract with Pleasant Ridge for shared fire and ambulance services. Ferndale City Manager April McGrath said not much has changed about the contract, but renewing it was an opportunity to discuss the partnership with Pleasant Ridge. "It just was an opportunity for us to kind of sit down and talk with them and make sure they were happy with our services," she said. Ferndale has provided fire services for Pleasant Ridge for the past 90 years, she said. “We are excited to continue our 90-year fire service partnership with Pleasant Ridge,” Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter said in a press release from the Ferndale city manager's office. Then, Leslie, the burden is on Patch to make better decisions about what they publish on this website. Perhaps that's the place to start and not be reactionary. "Instead of trying to memorize all that, you might boil it down to three main policies: “Keep it clean,” “Don’t try to trick people,” and “Treat others as you’d like to be treated.” Easy, right? " I've kept it clean, didn't trick anyone …   more ›

Pleasant Ridge Terminates Fire Contract with Ferndale

The City Commission unanimously approved termination of its fire protection contract with Ferndale and will continue negotiating a public safety merger with Berkley.

Ferndale officials received another letter Wednesday morning from Pleasant Ridge, notifying them that its 88-year fire protection contract would be terminated as of July 1, 2013. This decision came Tuesday night at Pleasant Ridge's City Commission meeting. Ferndale received a similar letter last week before this decision had a chance to go in front of the public governing body of Pleasant Ridge. Pleasant Ridge officials said the city attorney, who wrote the letter, sent the earlier letter accidentally. "Our city attorney screwed up," Pleasant Ridge Mayor Ralph Castelli Jr. said at the meeting Tuesday. The City Commission made the termination of its fire protection agreement with Ferndale official Tuesday night after a lengthy, passionate …

Mr. Gideon -- Thank you for the welcome; however, unfortunately is comes 15 years too late. While my residency "card" may not hold as many years as yours, I've grown up in the surrounding area most of my life. My intention is not to stir up trouble; rather, to bring to light a serious (and perhaps, uncomfortable) situation between these two cities. While others may not like to talk about it, or …   more ›

Pleasant Ridge Rescinds Notice to Terminate Fire Service with Ferndale

City manager apologizes for 'mix-up,' says officials are exploring options for fire protection that may not include Ferndale.

On June 6, the City of Ferndale received a letter from the City of Pleasant Ridge giving it notice it will terminate its 88-year fire contract in 2013, as the current contract requires it to give a two-year notice. On June 7, Ferndale received a second letter, rescinding the first. "I'm not exactly sure what's going on," Ferndale Councilman Scott Galloway said during Monday's City Council meeting after bringing up the letters. Pleasant Ridge City Manager Sherry Ball said it was a mix-up. "The city attorney was asked to draft a letter – somehow there was a mix-up in his office – and it was sent to Ferndale," she said Tuesday afternoon. "It was a great embarrassment. We contacted Ferndale's city manager and apologized. "There is an item on …
