That's the unintentional theme, this week, as our Circulation Specialist Kerrie Patterson spans Anime DVDs to emotional family drama fiction to post-punk compilations.
Here's another round of picks from the staff at the Ferndale Public Library. "The unintentional theme here is that everything is overall pretty depressing (whoops, maybe it's the weather)," Circulation Specialist Kerrie Patterson says. I dig Kerrie's style. Total professional, quite amicable and cheery in dealing with the public (despite her often black-centric wardrobe), yet charmed with a good sense of dry, dark humor. She's also opened up a lot of doors for me into the realms of awesome anime (Japanese manga/animation). This week, she shows off her anime sensibilities while also paying homage to new-wave/post-punk pioneers Joy Division (as this week marks the passing of their iconic front man/songwriter Ian Curtis). Who loves the sun…

Our newest page Eli Blake is quite a cool character once you get to know him and once you get past the purple hair! (Note: Hair-color may be something else entirely by the time you read this ... )
Eli Blake started working (at the Ferndale Public Library) as a page about one month ago and we're glad to have him. He's currently working to get his degree at (Oakland Community College), studying mental health and social work and resides in Southfield. Things of note about Eli: "Professional zombie" is something "I love and won't trade for the world," Blake said. Now, assuredly, Blake's quite the distinguished young gentleman, with piercings, tattoos and oddly colored hair (he styles it himself, by the way). "As intimidating as I may look, I try to always greet people with a smile and a friendly hello – always being courteous and polite," Blake said. "I love working at the Ferndale library because I'm able, for the most part, to be …

Kathleen's picks span the globe, from Poland, to Africa, to Native Americans serving in World War II.
Ferndale Library Page Kathleen Hellenberg always has an eclectic blend of picks. You can find her organizing our collection every morning, here at the Ferndale Library. She's a reliable resource, also, for recommendations in holistic living, science fiction and the culinary arts. Jordan Wright knows his Non-Fiction.
At the start of 2013, the Ferndale Public Library welcomed Jordan Wright, initially as a volunteer, and now, currently, a part-time staffer in Youth Services. Jordan has only lived in Ferndale for a year, but loves how open-minded and walkable the community is and says he can't imagine being anywhere else. Jordan is currently enrolled in Wayne State University's Master's of Library and Information Science program and is a Library Assistant in the Ferndale Public Library's Youth Services department. In his free time he likes to read and is interested in amateur astronomy. When he's not in school or at the library, you'll almost certainly find him walking around downtown Ferndale or relaxing with his three year old beagle, Jacob. He also …

Looking for something to read? Who better to ask than a librarian?
Librarian Tracy Wilson returns to the Ferndale Patch page to offer some picks for you. Tracy helps out as a Substitute Librarian at the Ferndale Public Library from time to time, and we're always happy to have her. She recently graduated from Wayne State and currently works over in Redford. It's getting towards the end of winter...(...we hope...) so it'd probably be nice to have a zesty blend of recommendations, colorful catches that run the gamut from zombies to cookbooks, poignant swan song melodramas to good ol' finespun historical fiction! Tracy does not disappoint. By Tracy Wilson World War Z by Max Brooks Fic B So as a general rule I don’t read zombie books or watch zombie movies. I feel similarly about vampires. I’m not much …

Kerrie Patterson is our newest staffer on the Circulation Desk - and each of her suggestions is something (book/movie/album) that she picked up in her first five months in Ferndale.
Kerrie Patterson comes to us from Waterford where she had experience serving the circulation staff of that area's larger, bustling public library. Coming on six-months into the job here at FPL, she still digs our town's laid-back atmosphere and how much of a role the library plays in the community... "Such as," Patterson says, "conducting the Ferndale Reads group reading event, with the 'flash-mob' style launch at Rust Belt. There's also the Metro Times Blowout coming through here," (with the Library featured as one of many venues for said-local music festival). Another awesome event, Patterson noted, is our First Stop Fridays - the monthly local music showcase. (We're hoping someday soon to feature the Ferndale-based quartet who produced …

Cecelia spotlights some hip new music (British neo trip-hop and ukulele-bolstered indie-pop) and recommends you revisit the most iconic of slasher flicks with a stay at the Bates Motel.
Cecelia Foley is our diligent afternoon Page, conducting the orderly-business of our shelves and occasionally pointing a patron in the right direction, when need-be, with her stylish levity and a cultural-savvy advanced beyond your usual sophomore. She's got a pick circa 1960 as well as a very recent Juno-award winning band from across the pond! AND ... she got this column together in-the-middle of Mid-Terms! Kudos! By Cecelia Foley The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian (by Sherman Alexie) Call No: YA ALEXIE We were required to read this book for school, but I'm so glad we were. The courageous Junior, a teenage Native American living on a poverty stricken reservation, kept me entertained the entire time. Growing up with 'role …

Kelly Derin, one of our valued Page assistants, offers her list of lyrical / musical persuasions.
Kelly Derin is quite a talented singer - so it would follow that she has a refined taste in music. It also follows that her selections for this week's round of Ferndale Library Recommendations are quite musical in nature (...even if some of it is in freeform poetry, compliments of Mr. Cummings). It's heavy on the indie-side of things, a bit underground or esoteric or...in one case...entirely Icelandic! But I second all of these. By Kelly Derin, Page Assistant at the Ferndale Public Library Sigur Ros- ( ) call number: CD – Sigur Ros This Icelandic band experiments with dreamy, emotional peaks of sorrow and triumph led by bowed guitar, piano, violin and the lead singer's soft yet strong falsetto croons. The language spoken is Hopelandic, a …

Every week, we look to our readers to help us compile a list of things to do, places to go, restaurants to try and whatever else we come up with.
March is Reading Month, so let's talk about books. We asked around, a few people, a few librarians, and got a few ideas for books for children and adults. Here are a few suggestions from Ferndale, Berkley, Royal Oak and Clawson. Feel free to add to this list in the comments section below. From the Ferndale Public Library: Children's librarian Jillean McCommons offers a few suggestions for different age groups. Reading something else? Tell us about it in the comments. Next week's list: Tell us about your favorite summer camps in the area. Patch Picks is a weekly feature on Ferndale Patch highlighting our picks and, more importantly, your picks for a number of things. We'll look and ask about great local businesses, local or near-local …
