William (Bill) Coyne, a former Ferndale Schools superintendent and former board chairman and director of Ferndale-based Credit Union ONE, died Thursday, March 28. He was 78 years old. He is survived by his wife Gail, two married sons, six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Coyne had a long and distinguished tenure from 1989-2009 as a member of Credit Union ONE's Supervisory Committee and also as Chairman of the Board. Throughout his years of volunteerism at Credit Union ONE, he also participated in many sub-committees of the Board. Coyne also had a long career with Ferndale Schools, culminating in the position of Superintendent of Ferndale Public Schools. Mahan was the public address announcer for Ferndale athletic events since 1947.
Ferndale resident Joe Mahan, known as the "Voice of the Eagles," died Tuesday at the age of 86. Mahan was a longtime supporter of Ferndale Public Schools and served as the public address announcer for Ferndale athletic events since 1947. He is survived by his wife Barbara, his children Mark, Peter and Tracey, and his eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 1-8 p.m. Thursday, March 21 at Wessels and Wilk Funeral Home, 23690 Woodward in Pleasant Ridge. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22 at Wessels and Wilk. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association. The community is mourning the loss of longtime resident and former Ferndale mayor Robert Paczkowski. Robert J. "Bob" Paczkowski, who served as mayor in the '70s and lived in Ferndale for many years with his wife and family, died Sunday in Waterford at the age of 86, according to a Spaulding & Curtin Funeral Directors obituary. Paczkowski was the beloved husband of 63 years to the late Kay and the loving father of Christine (Bruce) Green, Carol Marcoux (Ken Murney), Patti (Victor) Salazar, Lynne (Greg) Gagner and Kathy (David) Petoskey. TV pioneer Eliot, 91, passed away peacefully at home in Farmington Hills.
Detroit's beloved weatherman, Sonny Eliot, passed away in his Farmington Hills home Friday. He was 91. The Dorfman Chapel in Farmington Hills is handling funeral arrangements, which are pending. Known for his sunny disposition and his rapid-fire quips, Eliot had a 60-year career in Detroit broadcasting and was a pioneering TV personality. Eliot joined the staff of WWJ-TV (now WDIV) after World War II and stayed there for 35 years. He was a weatherman, host of the annual Thanksgiving Day parade broadcast and hosted an "At the Zoo" series. After TV, he kept the fun going on WWJ radio (950 AM). Donald Gattes, 49, of Ferndale, died Sunday while leaving work. "He was truly a wonderful person," said City Manager April Lynch.
The Ferndale community is mourning the loss of city employee and resident Donald Gattes, 49, who died Sunday as he was leaving work. Gattes, a crew leader for the Ferndale Department of Public Works, had been working on a water main break Sunday and was leaving work when he reportedly had a massive heart attack, said his neighbor Kay Watson. Watson said services will be held at Wessels and Wilk Funeral Home in Pleasant Ridge. The viewing will be from 1-9 p.m. Thursday and the funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday. Bancroft spent more than 40 years working with Ferndale Public Schools and is remembered as an "innovator" in the district.
The community is mourning the loss of Robert Allan Bancroft, a former Ferndale High School science teacher who died July 13 at age 69. Bancroft spent more than 40 years working with Ferndale Public Schools teaching science and technology. He retired in 2008 and has been living in Onsted. Bancroft is survived by his wife Pat, his son Sean Kelly Bancroft, his daughter Kirsten Sue (Wesley) Preston, and his grandsons Connor Allan and Ryan Curtis Preston, according to Handler Funeral Home of Tecumseh. Clyde Baker, 62, of Howell, died Monday after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Burns Twp.
The community is mourning the loss of a longtime teacher in the Hazel Park School District who passed away Monday in a bicycling accident. Retired teacher Clyde Baker, 62, of Howell, died after being struck by a car while riding his bicycle in Burns Twp., the Livingston Daily reported on Tuesday. "It was a shock," said Linda Peuterbaugh, who works in the district's technology department. "He really enjoyed the kids. He loved junior high kids. Cause of death unknown for Staff Sgt. Matthew J. Leach, 29, who died Tuesday in Kandahar, Afghanistan.
A 29-year-old soldier from Ferndale died Tuesday while on duty in Afghanistan, the Department of Defense confirmed on Wednesday. Staff Sgt. Matthew J. Leach, of Ferndale, died June 26 in Kandahar, Afghanistan. Leach was assigned to the 1/334th Regiment, 1st Brigade, 104th Training Division (Leader Training), based in Fraser. Major Alex Johnson, public affairs officer for the 104th Training Division, said Leach was found unconscious and unresponsive on the floor of the facility where he was stationed and did not recover. "The cause of death is not yet determined," Johnson said. Beveridge, who served for more than 32 years, died unexpectedly Saturday.
Retired Ferndale Police Officer Robert Beveridge died Saturday at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. He was 81 years old. Beveridge was born Sept. 12, 1930, and was a longtime Ferndale resident. He served as a police officer for more than 32 years with the Ferndale Police Department. He retired Oct. 6, 1986, according to the department. A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Saturday at the Fraternal Order of Police 130 hall, 2233 Burdette St., in Ferndale. “We’ll all miss him,” Ferndale Chief of Police Timothy Collins said at Monday night’s City Council meeting.
