It was an opportunity for a picnic, parade or festival and a chance to take a dip in the pool as the summer pool season began. The parade on Monday morning included tributes to those who gave their lives in service.
People of all ages lined Woodward, Nine Mile and Livernois on Monday morning to watch Ferndale's 94th annual Memorial Day Parade, followed by a ceremony honoring veterans at Ferndale's Memorial Mall. Enjoying sunny weather in the 80s, participants in the parade included Ferndale High School’s Golden Eagles Marching Band, representatives from all the U.S. Armed Services and numerous local and regional groups. Ferndale's parade is the oldest consecutive Memorial Day Parade in Michigan. The Michigan’s Fallen Heroes Foot Float was also part of the parade, with dozens of marchers solemnly carrying placards of each Michigan soldier who has died in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts since 2001. For many, Memorial Day weekend is about relaxing, spending time with friends and family and, of course, grilling. If you are game to try out a new recipe, here are a few Patch favorites. This recipe comes from Oakland Township-Lake Orion Patch and serves two. Ingredients Marinade Ingredients Directions Combine and blend the marinade ingredients in a bowl or plastic bag. Cut up the steak into chunks and add to the marinade; coat thoroughly. Marinate for at least a couple hours. Boil the potatoes until somewhat tender (but not too tender, or they'll fall apart on the grill). The city of Ferndale rolled out its first Memorial Day Parade in 1919. Now in 2012, it's a longstanding tradition that always draws crowds to downtown Ferndale to remember those who served. When: The parade begins at 10 a.m. Monday. Where: The parade lines up at 9:45 a.m. at Livernois and Maplehurst. It rolls out at 10 a.m., heading east on Maplehurst to Woodward, south to Nine Mile, west to Livernois and south to Veteran’s Memorial Mall where a service will be held honoring veterans. Volunteers are still needed during Ferndale's Memorial Day Parade on Monday to hold up signs honoring Michigan soldiers who have died in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts.
Some stand and salute, others applaud, and many are moved to tears. When the Michigan Fallen Heroes Foot Float goes through town as part of Ferndale's Memorial Day Parade, the responses from onlookers vary but one thing is consistent: "It demands a response," said organizer Larry Saville. "You can't stay neutral. It's the sense that it demands something out of us to acknowledge what these families gave." Volunteers in the walking tribute carry signs each displaying a photo and basic information about one of the 226 Michigan soldiers who have lost their lives in the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts since 2001. Now in its fifth year, the float is aiming to have enough volunteers on Monday so that each person carries only one sign. "That's so …
