MDEQ Approves Permit for Polar Environmental in Ferndale

The Air Quality Division has responded to public comments and questions in a document now available online.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality recently approved the proposed permit to install for Polar Environmental Service Corp. Polar, which is located at 707 E. Lewiston in Ferndale, handles the disposal and recycling of nonhazardous waste oil and wastewater. The MDEQ began taking a closer look at the facility and required it to apply for a permit after a Dec. 2, 2011 steam release that concerned hundreds of area residents. In late September, about 25 people from Ferndale and Pleasant Ridge attended an MDEQ hearing on the permit, where residents and city leaders expressed comments and concerns about the facility and proposed permit. Residents had concerns over strong odors coming from Polar, and Ferndale Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan …

Good news. I would like them to expand operations and bring even more jobs to Ferndale. I'm sick and tired of the NIMBY crowd, and amateur environmentalists.   more ›

Ferndale, Pleasant Ridge Residents Speak Out at Polar Public Hearing

The MDEQ has extended the public comment period for an additional week for the proposed Polar Environmental permit.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality will continue to take public comments through Oct. 5 as it considers a permit for Polar Environmental Service Corp. About 25 people were in attendance on Friday evening when the MDEQ held a public hearing on the permit. The hearing, held at Ferndale High School, gave residents a chance to ask questions of MDEQ representatives - including the inspector assigned to Polar - and have their comments …

Polar has been recycling oil for over 50 years using about the same process, I am sure that it is not without risk but the evidence of the last 50 years appears to be that it is safe. I think the State has done an appropriate job of reviewing Polar's practices and records and they will be reviewing Polar's practices from now on. This is no guarantee of absolute safety but then again there is no …   more ›

MDEQ Issues Air Quality Alert for Friday, Declares Ozone Action Day

Sunshine and high temperatures will combine Friday to make the air unhealthy for sensitive groups.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) has declared Friday to be an action day for elevated levels of ozone. Pollutants are expected to be in the unhealthy for sensitive groups range.  Friday will be sunny and warm with a highs in the low to mid 90s in southeast Michigan. Chance of rain is 10 percent. People and businesses should avoid these activities on Ozone Action days: Everyone is encouraged to car pool, use their bicycles or walk, and delay or combine errands when possible. Active children and adults, and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion, the MDEQ advises. Air Quality Action Alert Extends Through Sunday

An MDEQ spokesperson says rain moving slowly into the area may bring some relief by Monday.

The Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality today issued a third consecutive Air Action Day alert, effective Sunday.  Ozone levels were considered "unhealthy for sensitive groups" on Friday and Saturday of this week. Rain in the forecast will lower ozone and particulate levels, an MDEQ spokesperson said. "The approaching cold front will pass through the state late Sunday into Monday bringing a decent chance for rain from west to east as it moves through. Northwesterly winds will be on the weak side behind the front but should still be enough to improve air quality conditions statewide," Stephanie Hengesbach wrote in an email announcing the alert.  People and businesses should avoid these activities on Air Action days: Everyone is …

UPDATED: MDEQ Declares Air Quality Action Days Friday, Saturday

High temperatures and humidity and 'ample sunshine' may drive up ozone levels.

UPDATE: The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) announced Friday that Friday's Air Quality Action Day has been extended through Saturday.  A sunny Friday with temperatures climbing into the upper 80s triggered an Air Quality Action Day for southeast Michigan, the MDEQ announced Thursday. "Air quality is expected to erode as southerly winds, increasing temperatures/humidity, and ample sunshine combine to make elevated ozone formation likely," MDEQ spokesperson Jim Haywood wrote. People and businesses should avoid these activities on Air Action days: Everyone is encouraged to car pool, use their bicycles or walk, and delay or combine errands when possible. Active children and adults, and persons with respiratory diseases such…

MDEQ Issues Air Quality Alert Monday for Southeast Michigan

Plenty of sun and temperatures in the 90s prompt an alert that air quality may be unhealthy for people with breathing problems.

The combination of sunshine, warmer temperatures and a southwesterly wind expected Monday have prompted the Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to issue an Air Quality Action Day for southeast Michigan on Monday. According to a statement issued by the MDEQ, "high pressure at the surface and upper levels moves in for Monday and more widespread ozone development is expected by then." People and businesses should avoid these activities on Air Action days: Everyone is encouraged to car pool, use their bicycles or walk, and delay or combine errands when possible. Active children and adults, and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion, the MDEQ advises. Air Quality Alert Issued for Southeast Michigan Friday

Ozone concentration levels are expected to be unhealthy for sensitive people today.

With a zero percent chance of rain today and the forecast calling for sunny skies and a high of 86, the beautiful day won't be perfect for everyone. The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has issued an "Air Alert Day" because of high ozone concentrations. "Plenty of sunshine, warmer temperatures and a more conducive wind flow will allow ozone levels to continue increasing," said Stephanie Hengesbach with MDEQ in a news release. Hengesbach added that a breeze from the western lakeshore will bring pollution onshore later in the day and also in southeast Michigan primarily to the northwest of the Detroit area. People and businesses are encouraged to avoid these activities: Everyone is encouraged to car pool, use their bicycles or …

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality alert has been issued for most of Southeast Michigan, including Wayne and Oakland counties. Air Quality Alert Issued for Southeast Michigan Thursday

Temperatures could hit record highs tomorrow, the National Weather Service predicts.

Predicted high temperatures and poor air quality have the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) issuing an "Air Action Day" alert Thursday. The National Weather Service (NWS) forecasts tomorrow's daytime high could reach 97, under mostly sunny skies.  According to the MDEQ release, "ozone concentrations in the Mississippi Valley have already reached USG (unhealthy for sensitive groups) levels" and that air mass is headed toward Michigan. Cleaner winds from the west could mean improved air quality, the release indicated, but the potential for unsafe levels of ozone led officials to issue the alert.  People and businesses are encouraged to avoid these activities tomorrow: Everyone is encouraged to car pool, use their bicycles …
