Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Kelly's Picks

Kelly Derin, one of our valued Page assistants, offers her list of lyrical / musical persuasions.

Kelly Derin is quite a talented singer - so it would follow that she has a refined taste in music. It also follows that her selections for this week's round of Ferndale Library Recommendations are quite musical in nature (...even if some of it is in freeform poetry, compliments of Mr. Cummings). It's heavy on the indie-side of things, a bit underground or esoteric or...in one case...entirely Icelandic! But I second all of these. By Kelly Derin, Page Assistant at the Ferndale Public Library Sigur Ros-  ( ) call number: CD – Sigur Ros This Icelandic band experiments with dreamy, emotional peaks of sorrow and triumph led by bowed guitar, piano, violin and the lead singer's soft yet strong falsetto croons. The language spoken is Hopelandic, a …

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Kelly's Fall Picks

Another round of personal picks presented for your consideration of recreational/enlightening engagement by the staff at the Ferndale Library. This week, Head of Circulation Kelly Bennett offers up her picks.

Another summer of reading, listening and watching has almost passed. A lot of hoopla is made about the "beach book" and the "summer album," but I think these choices transcend seasons and make great entertainment anytime! Year Zero by Robert Reid SF REID In the spirit of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy comes this snarkily funny book about what would happen if aliens became obsessed with Earth's music, used their advanced technology to distribute it to billions of listeners, and then realized they had run afoul of our convoluted copyright law. It's sci-fi, yes, but not the kind that makes you have to know what dilithium is, or is supposed to be.  The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón FIC ZAFÓN I love books about books…

'Encyclopedia Brown' Author Sobol Dead at 87

Author of popular series of children's mysteries died July 11 from natural causes, according to family.

Donald J. Sobol, the author behind the popular Encyclopedia Brown series of children's mysteries, died in Miami July 11. He was 87. Sobol's son said that his father died of natural causes. Amateur pre-teen sleuth Leroy "Encyclopedia" Brown fascinated kids in a series of fictional mystery books beginning in 1963. Together with detective partner and tomboy Sally Kimball, Encyclopedia is a mainstay in classrooms and libraries worldwide. Brown, nicknamed "Encyclopedia" for his vast knowledge, also possessed a keen eye, which allowed him to help his police chief father, usually over dinner. Brown would also solve crimes from his garage, together with Kimball, usually perpetuated by antagonist Bugs Meany. For a complete list of Sobol's works …

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Ed's Picks

Another round of personal picks presented for your consideration of recreational/enlightening engagement by the staff at the Ferndale Library. This week, Head of Reference Ed Burns offers up some favorite movies from his youth.

Even before Ed Burns was a librarian here at Ferndale Public Library, he was passionate about the place. His work with the Friends of the Ferndale Library group was only the beginning. Ed puts on the library's periodic themed movie series, and will be bringing the wildly successful "Movieable Feast" program back to this year's summer schedule. In addition to purchasing DVDs for the library, he also selects books for our non-fiction section. All this and he manages the Reference Department and can often be seen helping patrons with computer and reference questions. Let's hear what great movie picks Ed has for us this week! By Ed Burns I’ve been working as a librarian at the Ferndale Public Library for five years.  Among my duties is …

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Kelly's Picks

Another round of personal picks presented for your consideration of recreational/enlightening engagement by the staff at the Ferndale Library. This week, Head of Circulation Kelly Bennett offers up her picks.

I'm pretty sure the vast majority of folks who see me at the Ferndale Public Library's Circulation Desk think of me as "the girl whose hair is always different." Indeed, it does change often (currently, it's black with blue-green highlights), but I hope one constant is my insatiable need to recommend library materials to patrons as well as see what they're enjoying. Over my 11 or so years at the library, I've consistently worked the Circ Desk, developed a local music collection and most recently, became the new Head of Circulation. It's not much of a confession to say that I'm easily obsessed. As soon as I'm friendly with a person, I am likely to spill the beans on the latest thing I can't do without. It's usually after the shine has worn …
