"She's doing the opposite in Troy of what we've been trying to do in Ferndale," said Craig Covey, Oakland County commissioner and former Ferndale mayor.
A fundraiser will be held in Ferndale this weekend to support the recall of Troy Mayor Janice Daniels, who has been under fire since December for using an anti-gay slur on her Facebook page. Craig Covey, an Oakland County commissioner and former Ferndale mayor, is organizing the fundraiser, called "Recall Troy Mayor Janice Daniels Ferndale Solidarity Party." The event will be held at Soho in Ferndale from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 7. Organizers will take donations of any amount to benefit the recall effort. Troy residents will vote on Nov. 6 whether to recall Daniels, who was elected to office in November. "The Ferndale community decided it wanted to help," said Covey. Daniels first came under fire in December for an anti-gay Facebook …

"The gay community is under attack in this state," said Affirmations Executive Director David Garcia, who took the first 24-hour hunger strike shift on Monday.
A 100-day hunger strike began in Ferndale on Monday morning aiming to bring light to the issues most affecting LGBT residents in Michigan. Affirmations in Ferndale is one of eight LGBT community centers in the state taking part in the strike, protesting what they call Michigan’s "extreme anti-equality environment" with a 100-day strike exactly 100 days before the election. LGBT community center directors and other volunteers will take turns serving 24-hour hunger strike shifts in a makeshift living room set up near the front windows at Affirmations (live video stream available here). David Garcia, executive director at Affirmations, took the first shift starting at 9 a.m. Monday, going without food for 24 hours while he lived on display in…

Ferndale's LGBT community center reacts to the news that the Boy Scouts of America will continue to deny gay people membership.
The Boy Scouts of America reaffirmed its position today that the organization will continue to deny gay people membership, the Huffington Post reported Tuesday. The decision comes after a confidential two-year review by the organization and rules out any potential changes to the policy - which applies to both leaders and Scouts. The review committee was unanimous in its decision, continuing a long-standing policy that was upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court in 2000 and has been controversial ever since, the Huffington Post reports. In Ferndale, Affirmations Executive Director David Garcia said he was "dismayed and disappointed" by the news. "As a former Boy Scout myself, I continue to be dismayed and disappointed by the homophobic actions …

'We hope more of our straight allies will do the same,' Affirmations program director says of the president's statement on same-sex marriage.
It was a normal day at Affirmations in Ferndale on Wednesday afternoon when the LGBT community center got word of some major news: President Barack Obama had just announced his support for same-sex marriages. "We were all in the middle of our work day here doing what we're doing on an everyday basis. All of a sudden everybody was getting Facebook notices and texts about Obama making the statement," said Johnny Jenkins, Jr., director of programs at Affirmations. "It was a pleasant surprise to everybody and everybody's excited." In an interview for ABC's Good Morning America, which will appear in full on Thursday, Obama became the first president to voice his support for gay marriage. "I have to tell you that over the course of several years…

The Rev. Mark Bidwell passed away Tuesday afternoon.
The Rev. Mark Bidwell, former pastor of the Metropolitan Community Church of Detroit in Ferndale, an LGBT-community church, died of organ failure Tuesday afternoon, Bidwell's daughter, Amy Dooley, 29, told the Daily Tribune. The church announced the news via its website and Facebook page Tuesday. Bidwell, 53, had resigned from the church in September after a sex-party scandal that resulted in the death of a 43-year-old man in Bidwell's Ferndale home of what police said was a drug overdose. At the time, Bidwell was also a Ferndale police chaplain. The scandal resulted in his termination at that position. “We are deeply saddened whenever drug addiction impacts an individual or community,” the Rev. Nancy Wilson, moderator of the Metropolitan …
