Still No Suspects for Khamarko's Killer

Ferndale Police continue their search for the discount store owner's killer, while his family looks to sell the business or lease the building.

On Nov. 26, the day after Thanksgiving, the Khamarko family changed forever. The family patriarch, Karim Khamarko, owned the Dollar Club Plus. Sometime between 8:35-8:55 p.m., shortly before he was to close the shop, an individual entered the discount store. What exactly happened then is uncertain, but it ended with two shots fired into Khamarko. Ferndale Police called it a botched robbery. The suspect made off with a nominal amount of cash. A woman came in shortly after the shots were fired and called 911. Khamarko, 64, died that evening at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. His killer is still at large. "We have evidence being processed at a lab, we're still conducting the investigation on that, but leads haven't been coming in," …

'It's Too Emotional': Family of Slain Store Owner to Close Shop

On Nov. 26, Karim Khamarko was fatally wounded during a botched robbery attempt. The family tried to keep the store going, but it's proving too difficult.

When the phone rings, Karim Khamarko's grandchildren still ask if it's "Jido," the Chaldean word for grandpa. "His grandkids were his life, they enriched his life," Khamarko's daughter Candace Khamarko said. "He could talk about them all day long. He would call all the time. When the phone rings, they still say 'Jido.'" On the night of Nov. 26, Khamarko's store, Dollar Club Plus on Hilton, was robbed. Khamarko, 64, was the only one there at the time. What exactly transpired is still being investigated by Ferndale Police, but they have called it a "botched robbery." The end result was two bullets fired at Khamarko, who died shortly afterward at Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. The shooter left three grandchildren, five children and a wife with…

Balloons Released in Honor of Slain Store Owner

Family marks memory of Karim Khamarko, who was shot twice Nov. 26 during a botched robbery at Dollar Club Plus. His killer is still loose.

Aida Khamarko sent up 34 balloons Wednesday afternoon, each representing a year of marriage to her husband Karim Khamarko, who was killed two months ago during a robbery attempt at his Ferndale store. Each one said, "I love you."  "I sent them up to him," she said. In all, 250 balloons were released in the parking lot of the Dollar Club Plus to honor 64-year-old Karim Khamarko's life and remind everyone that his killer is still loose. Khamarko was working at his store on Hilton the evening of Nov. 26 when sometime between 8:35-8:55 p.m. a person entered the store to rob it. Something went wrong, a gun was fired twice and Karim Khamarko was fatally wounded. "People come in on a regular basis. They come in to say hi, tell us how much they …

With killer still on the loose, Karim Khamarko's family seeks answers and peace.

On Nov. 26, Karim Khamarko was shot twice during a botched robbery of his store, the Dollar Club Plus on Hilton, and later died at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak. The killer is still at large. On Wednesday, the two-month anniversary of Khamarko's shooting death, the Khamarko family is having a balloon release in his memory at the Dollar Club Plus at 2 p.m. "My family needs closure and we want justice for my father so he can rest in peace," Candace Khamarko, Karim Khamarko's daughter, said in a statement. "We need your help keeping his story alive.  This has been the hardest thing my family has ever gone through.  My dad was everything to me and my family. Family of Slain Store Owner Reopens Dollar Club Plus

"It would have been too hard to walk away from something he was so passionate about," son says.

Karim Khamarko was shot twice in his discount store on Hilton Road during the evening of Nov. 26 for the money in the register. He died shortly after. For the next two weeks, the only thing that lit the Dollar Club Plus, where the crime took place, were the candles of the makeshift memorial that family, friends and neighbors had constructed. Last week, however, that changed when the Khamarko family reopened the store. "We decided to reopen the store for several reasons," said Khamarko's son, Kevin. "But, ultimately, we knew that is what our dad would have wanted." The 64-year-old storeowner operated a business in Ferndale for 15 years, 10 years at the Hilton Road location. The Dollar Club Plus building started as a video store – located …

I plan on making a trip in to the store soon. I frequented this store often and always found either mom and daughter or dad behind the counter. What a great family they are!! I remember when this dollar store was a video store. They have been a mainstay in the community for a long time. I am praying for the family. I lost my father this past November and I was so sad until I heard about Mr. …   more ›

Karim Khamarko was fatally shot Nov. 26 at his store on Hilton Road.

Dollar store owner Karim Khamarko's killer is still out there and the $15,000 reward is still on the table. "(Neighborhood) tips are slowly and steadily coming in," Ferndale Police Stg. Patrick Jones said Monday. "People might remember something, they may not think it's anything important but it might be something (for investigators)." The police are not releasing any details about the suspect – or suspects. "We can't say it was just one," Jones said. "We're looking into everything and everybody at this point." Jones, however, did say the incident was being investigated as a robbery. "The shooting was part of a robbery," Jones said. Khamarko, the owner of the Dollar Club Plus on Hilton Road, was attacked sometime between 8:35 p.m. and 8:…

Family, Community Mourn Slain Dollar Store Owner

'He didn't deserve for his life to end this way,' said the daughter of businessman Karim Khamarko, whose robbery shooting death leaves a hole.

The Khamarko family stood Tuesday afternoon under the awning of the Dollar Club Plus, out of the rain. Some were sobbing, some were consoling, but all were staring out into a half-dozen microphones and cameras. "My dad was a hard-working guy and he didn't deserve for his life to end this way," Candace Khamarko, 23, said. "We just want people out there to please come forward with any information." She paused, her eyes welled up. "Thank you." Her father, Karim Khamarko, 64, of Southfield, was gunned down while working alone Friday night at his store on Hilton Road. "A person came in and shot two times. Cash was taken, but certainly not enough to justify something like this," Ferndale Police Detective Lt. William Wilson said. Wilson said …
