Hot, Hot, Hot! Excessive Heat Warning Issued for Ferndale Tuesday

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for southeastern Michigan Tuesday, as temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees, but feel as high as 107.

Another potentially record-breaking day is headed our way. The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat warning for southeastern Michigan Tuesday, as temperatures are expected to reach 100 degrees during the afternoon. It's not expected to be excessively humid, but dew points in the mid-60s could make it feel like it's anywhere from 102 to 107 degrees outside. The Kulick Center in Ferndale will act as a cooling center for interested residents until 8 p.m. this evening. For more information, contact the center staff at 248-544-6767. The good news is there's a cold front coming in that should provide some relief from what NWS calls "dangerous heat" for the rest of the week. However, the excessive heat warning remains in effect …

5 Ways to Stay Cool Today in Ferndale

Relaxing in the air conditioning at home isn't a choice for at least 1,700 customers in the city without power, so here are some other ways to beat the heat on Saturday.

Like most Ferndale residents, 5-year-old Tallulah Smith isn't too happy about the current power outage. "It is not good. I have to open like every window!" she said Thursday afternoon while she, her 5-year-old friend Ion and Ion's mom took a snack break after a bike ride in downtown Ferndale. "I don't really like storms." The 1,780 DTE customers in the city without power as of late Friday evening would probably agree, especially those missing their air conditioning as temperatures reach over 90 degrees. Looking for some ways to stay cool? Here are a few ideas, and be sure to add your own suggestions in the comments section below.

Temperatures Over 100 Degrees Expected Friday

MDEQ declares a fifth consecutive Air Quality Alert Day as levels of ozone and fine particulates, coupled with temperatures over 100 degrees, are expected to make the air unhealthy for those with respiratory diseases.

With the mercury expected to top 101 degrees today and continued high humidity, the Michigan Dept. of Environmental Quality has extended Thursday's Air Quality Alert through Friday. According to a statement issued Thursday, MDEQ officials expect increased levels of ozone and fine particulates to make the air unhealthy for sensitive groups. People and businesses should avoid these activities on Air Action days: Everyone is encouraged to car pool, use their bicycles or walk, and delay or combine errands when possible. Active children and adults, and persons with respiratory diseases such as asthma, should limit prolonged outdoor exertion, the MDEQ advises. Residents Rack up Bills, Lose Fish During Power Outage

Many Ferndale residents' possessions of value — and thousands of dollars — were lost during the 2½-day outage.

After the power shut off in above-90-degree weather last week and Carl Larson's house started to cook, he uprooted his fiancée and 4-month-old child to the Atheneum Suite Hotel in Detroit for three days. "It was a mini, unplanned vacation," the 28-year-old Ferndale resident said. "It was unplanned and not all that much fun." Like many Ferndale residents left without power, Larson was forced to adapt and shell out cash on additional expenses. The hotel visit and additional expenses, such as food lost in the fridge, cost him around $700.  He said his fiancée is seeking to get back some of those funds from insurance and a reimbursement from DTE Energy. Much of Ferndale's power went out about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and, for some, didn't come back…

At Tonight's Council Meeting, DTE Rep to Explain Why Power Outage Occurred

Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter requested DTE send someone to explain to the city what exactly happened during last week's heat wave.

After several conference calls with DTE Energy during last week's power outage that affected as many as 6,000 Ferndale homes and businesses, Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter requested a representative from the utility come to a City Council meeting and explain to the city's customers what exactly happened. The outage began about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday and lasted through 6 a.m. Saturday during a weeklong heat wave that put a strain on the region's power system. "After a series of (calls) with DTE over our blackout, I talked about communication and asked them to send someone to Monday's council meeting to explain to the residents what happened," Coulter said. DTE Energy has said the outage was heat related. After several days of 90-plus degree …

Substation Fully Repaired by Sunday Morning; DTE Rep to Attend Monday Council Meeting

"Everything is up and running," utility spokesman says. Mayor and DTE praise cooperation during tough situation.

Though Ferndale is fully powered up, the West Nine Mile and Dover substation won't be 100 percent repaired until Sunday morning, DTE Energy says. DTE will be working on the substation throughout today and the night to get it back up to speed, DTE spokesmen Len Singer said. In the meantime, the utility has "jumpered" circuits and brought in a third generator to keep the power going in Ferndale. Jumpering is, essentially, hooking up customers to another circuit to send electricity to those customers without diverting energy from other customers. "Everything is up and running," Singer said Saturday afternoon. "We're finalizing repairs on the cable, we've brought in a third generator and everything is working fine." Some Ferndale residents …

Mark, does the city own the transformer at 9 and Dover or does DTE own it, operate it and maintain it? Does our city have an employee with the knowledge and ability to run/maintain a substation like that? All I have ever seen over there are DTE vehicles in the past but if the city owns the operation over there I certainly would think oversight is called for - I'm all for solar power - how about …   more ›

Fire Chief Implores Ferndale Residents to Conserve Power

"If we don't conserve the energy now, we could be right where we were yesterday," Sullivan says.

Despite DTE Energy restoring Ferndale's power circuits to 100 percent and several residents and businesses announcing they have electricty, Ferndale Fire Chief Kevin Sullivan said now is the time to conserve energy. "We're still need to be careful with our energy consumption," Sullivan said. "As DTE flicks the switch on neighborhoods, fans are plugged in, lights are on, phone chargers are plugged in, the usage meter will skyrocket." The chief said it's important for Ferndale residents and businesses to turn off and unplug whatever they aren't using to keep usage as low as possible as DTE regains its footing in Ferndale. "If we don't conserve the energy now, we could be right where we were yesterday," he said Saturday morning. Sullivan said…

I have to agree with the Mayor that,we the citizens of Ferndale, need to contact the MPSC in Lansing to have them get to the bottom of this with DTE and find out why this happened in the first place. I don't believe for once that it had to do with the "heat" that we had over the week. I truly feel it's because the infrastructure is old and needs to be replaced but instead of making a true fix to …   more ›

DTE: All Power in Ferndale Restored

Residents and businesses rejoice after nearly 2 1/2 days of electricity going on and off in Ferndale and a full shutdown at 2:30 a.m. Saturday that left nearly 6,500 customers without power.

After 2 1/2 days of power outages and brownouts for the majority of Ferndale, DTE Energy spokesman John Austerberry has reported that all power has been restored in Ferndale. "At 6 this morning, all customers in Ferndale have been restored," Austerberry said. Started on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., Ferndale residents started reporting outages throughout the city. By Wednesday night, about 5,000 homes and businesses were without power. DTE reported that a cable bringing in electricity to a transformer at the West Nine Mile and Dover substation blew. DTE workers than began to transfer customers from the cable to the second transformer at the substation. Due to the stress and the continued heat, that second cable malfunctioned Thursday night, …

Deena is correct. It's basically a 25 dollar credit if power was lost for more than 16 hours. Mine was off for 28 hrs, then on for 2, and off again for 31....so I am going to make two seperate claims. If you make a claim to your insurance...you risk a rate increase.....   more ›

DTE Official Explains Planned Power Shutdown

Vice President Vincent Dow tells why the majority of consumers in Ferndale will lose service at 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

Ferndale residents were reporting mass power outages starting at 1 a.m. Saturday morning, well ahead of DTE Energy's planned 2:30 a.m. shutdown to make repairs to the  West Nine Mile and Dover substation. DTE Energy's Vice President of Distribution Vincent Dow held a press conference at 9 p.m. Friday at the substation in Ferndale to explain why the company would cut power to the majority of the homes and businesses early Saturday. "The majority of Ferndale will be cut at 2:30 a.m.," he said. DTE estimated about 5,500 customers will be cut off at 2:30 a.m. on top of the 800 that currently without power in Ferndale. "Basically, what happened (Thursday) night will happen tonight at 2:30 a.m.," Coulter said. Dow said DTE must shut down the …

DTE to Shut Down Substation at 2:30 a.m., Cutting Off 7,500 Customers

Backup generator at West Nine substation is faulty, so utility will have to shut down the facility for repairs.

DTE Energy will shut down the West Nine Mile substation at 2:30 a.m. Saturday, affecting an additional 5,500 customers in Ferndale, bringing the total homes and businesses without power to 7,500, DTE spokesman Len Singer said. The power is expected to be out for about six hours. The reason for the shutdown is that the second generator brought in to alleviate the current outages temporarily is faulty. The first generator placed Friday in east Oak Park was working, but only powering about 300 customers. Because of the faulty generator, DTE must shut down the substation to repair it. The main issue is a malfunctioned cable that pumps the transformers in the substation with voltage. Earlier this afternoon, DTE was attempting to locate the …

Exactly. The article talks about fixing things early Saturday morning, but then suddenly mentions that the power won't be on for many until Sunday morning! It's okay though, because we can all just sleep on cots at a cooling station, so what do we care?   more ›
