Did Someone Say Free S'Mores?

Yep - free s'mores offered at Ferndale's Local Kitchen and Bar at midnight Thursday through Saturday nights.

When the clock strikes midnight, plan to be at Local Kitchen and Bar if you're in the mood for a late-night snack. The new restaurant, which opened in August in the former Via Nove location at 344 W. Nine Mile Road, is offering free s'mores at midnight on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in front of their wood-burning fireplace. You can expect more than the traditional marshmallow, graham crackers and chocolate combo. Local mixes it up a bit with sides like candy, fruit and more, said general manager Kim Drouillard. Local is also planning to roll out a new lunch menu next week. Tri-County Seniors Invited to Free Day at the Zoo Today

Senior Day will feature live music, tractor train tours, bingo and more.

Senior citizens living in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties are invited to enjoy a day at the Detroit Zoo on Senior Day - today from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Seniors 62 and older and a caregiver will receive free admission, parking and rides on the Tauber Family Railroad. Senior Day will feature live music, tractor train tours, bingo and a senior resource area. The day’s activities will also include zookeeper talks highlighting some of the Zoo’s senior animal residents. The fall Senior Day is one of two free days for tri-county seniors held annually at the Detroit Zoo in appreciation for voter approval in 2008 of a ballot proposal to fund the Zoo.

Jenny, those that visit the zoo are getting a deeply discounted ticket already. The zoo's annual budget divided by the number of visitors equals to an expense of over $50 per person. Cost of admission is $14 and the taxpayers make up the other $36. If a family of four visits they pay $52 (two kids and two adults prices) and we taxpayers pay $148. Isn't dumocracy great? Today is Last Saturday for Free Compost

The final Saturday in May to pick up free compost at the city’s Southwest Storage Yard is May 26 from 8 a.m. until noon.

Today is the last Saturday to take advantage of the free compost offered at the city of Ferndale's Southwest Storage Yard. Compost will be available at the yard, located on Central Street behind Ferndale High School, from 8 a.m. until noon. Residents can load their pick-up trucks or take smaller amounts. The free compost is available for Ferndale residents only - driver's licenses will be checked. The compost was available every Saturday in May. You can also go to the city yard for compost Monday through Thursday between 8 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
