WAB to Host Food Truck Rally on Saturday

The all-day event will include a beer tent, seven food trucks and family-friendly activities.

Woodward Avenue Brewers is gearing up for the first of three all-day food truck events it will host this summer. The first "Ferndale Truck Stop" will be held from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Saturday on Troy Street behind the WAB and The Emory and will feature a beer tent, seven food trucks and family-friendly activities. Emily Husband, manager at the Emory, said the Michigan Mobile Food Vendors Association approached her about the idea of hosting an event that could include a beer tent - something that hasn't been available at other area food truck rallies. "I said 'That's awesome, we'd love to do that,'" she said. "We just kind of saw that hole and wanted to fill the void." Two more food truck events are planned outside the WAB on Aug. 4 …

Ferndale Ready for Second Helping of Food Truck Rally This Week

City Council approves the special event permit for Metro Detroit Street Eats to happen monthly, just in time for Thursday's event.

At Monday's Ferndale City Council meeting, the special event permit for the second Metro Detroit Street Eats was approved, meaning Ferndale's food truck rally will now become a monthly event. When the event was first hosted in March, thousands of foodies turned out to sample the mobile vendors and Ferndale's street fare. "They all told me that it was the best event they've had yet as far as number of sales and revenues," Rust Belt Market owner Chris Best said of the vendors after March's launch. "It was the best event yet." Up to 3,500 people took part in the gourmet showcase-on-wheels put on last month by Rust Belt Market and the Michigan Mobile Food Vendors Association. As with last time, the food truck rally this Thursday will be in the…

Ferndale Council OKs Food Truck Rally, Undecided on Street Vendor Regulations

Parking pilot program and Secreto liquor license approved and more at Monday night's meeting.

After an hour of discussion Monday night, the Ferndale City Council decided to wait a couple of more weeks before acting on the regulation of street and mobile vendors while approving the Metro Detroit Street Eats food truck rally as a monthly event. Here are the highlights from Monday's council meeting: Members of City Council were rendered speechless at various points of Monday’s meeting during the final discussion of proposed restrictions to Ferndale’s street and mobile vendors. The Downtown Development Authority proposed a resolution regulating public vending spaces, in attempts to reduce the days and operation times of local street vendors, set fees for them and eliminate the option to use sandwich board signs. DDA Director Cristina …

What did the city council expect? They should never had thought getting the DDA's recommendation on this would be anything but biased against the street vendors and food trucks. It is a complete conflict of interest. The DDA gets all of its money through increased property taxes in the downtown. If they add extra competition against any new or present businesses that pay those taxes, they would …   more ›

Ferndale Food Truck Rally a Success, Organizers Say

Between 2,500 to 3,000 people attended the Metro Detroit Street Eats event at the Rust Belt Market last Wednesday. Organizers are still ironing out plans for potential repeat events.

For Rust Belt owner Chris Best, the food truck rally Wednesday inside and outside the market was something like hosting a party – for a whole lot of people. "It's like throwing a party and having 2,000 people and being the host," Best said with a laugh. Though it was stressful at times, "I just wanted everybody to have a good time," he said. Metro Detroit Street Eats drew in an estimated 2,500-3,000 people. The event, which was sponsored by the Michigan Mobile Food Vendors Association, featured seven food trucks stationed in the alley behind the Rust Belt Market with dining tables available inside along with live entertainment and the market's wide selection of unique items for sale by local vendors. The event was similar to the food truck…

Photos: Ferndale's First Street Eats Food Truck Rally Draws Crowds

Share your photos from Wednesday's Metro Detroit Street Eats and tell us what you thought about the event.

Thousands of people from across the area came to Downtown Ferndale Wednesday night for Metro Detroit Street Eats, a mobile food vendor event at the Rust Belt Market. The event, which was sponsored by the Michigan Mobile Food Vendors Association, featured seven food trucks stationed in the alley behind the Rust Belt market with dining tables available inside along with live entertainment and the market's wide selection of unique items for sale by local vendors. By 7 p.m., about 2,000 to 2,500 people had been through the event, said organizer Scott Maloney, owner of Treat Dreams. At just 4:45 p.m., before many people even got out of work, the alley was bustling with at least 200 people trying foods, chatting and many wandering inside to shop…

Need to Know: Ferndale Food Truck Rally is Wednesday

Find out what food choices you'll find at the first monthly Metro Detroit Street Eats in Ferndale set for 4-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Rust Belt Market.

Metro Detroit Street Eats, a mobile food vendor event, will roll into Ferndale for the first time from 4-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Rust Belt Market. On Feb. 27, Ferndale City Council approved a special event permit for Street Eats and also permitted the closure of the alley behind Rust Belt, where food trucks will be parked. The event will be similar to the food truck rally at the Farmers Market in Royal Oak earlier this month and in February, which at only halfway through the event saw 1,200 customers served by the six food trucks and a cart from Treat Dreams in Ferndale. It is sponsored by the Michigan Mobile Food Vendors Association. Here are some of the vendors scheduled to participate: Not to worry! Organizers say the event could become…
