"We just wanted to extend gratitude to the community for its continued enthusiasm and support – not just for the (Ferndale Public Library) but for local music overall," in this recap of last weekend's Metro Times Blowout. Pretty cool, huh?
"I hope we're not too loud to play in a library ..." We hear that from local rock bands all the time; politely hesitant, at first, to turn their amps all the way up before performing live sets inside our Community Room. The thing is, the Ferndale Public Library hosts local music so regularly that, not only have we gotten pretty good at hosting (as an ad hoc 'concert venue') but we're more than inclined to let any band be as loud as they want ... It was with voluminous joy that we got to participate as a venue tied to the three-day all local music festival: the 16th annual Metro Times Blowout. We hosted three nights (with three bands performing each night) and the photos – taken by Head of Circulation Kelly Bennett – are viewable above. …

News from the Ferndale Public Library: Two upcoming discussions this month, and the 'First Stop Fridays' music series gets The Blues.
We're hosting three exciting and insightful presentations in our community room at the Ferndale Public Library over the next two weeks - from rollickin' rock and boogieable blues to a joke-dotted yet thought-provoking discussion on patternism in abstract art (augmented by a light show!). We'll also look a hundred years (or more) back to earlier days in Ferndale with this presentation from Garry Andrews-Taylor, president of the Ferndale Historical Society: President Andrews' attendance-to and upkeep-of the Ferndale Museum has certainly ameliorated its standing as of late to a modest but vital institution of preservation. His presentation gives library patrons a peak inside at some artifacts encompassing the one-time lay of the land and the …

It's my turn! Trying to catch up on all the books I missed...
Happy Holidays! You know, I had a jotted out a customary LIST for you - some of my favorite albums of the year. (The Seer by Swans... Lonerism by Tame Impala... Love This Giant by David Byrne & St. Vincent... Sun by Cat Power... R.A.P. Music by Killer Mike... even a re-issue of legendary Krautrockers CAN, with their quintessential Tago Mago). Then I realized: lists are insufferable! Ultimately aggravating proceedings, really. I mean, fun...also; and often potentially helpful for those in need of matching their appeal to the myriad titles, styles and genres available...(...ahem, at your local library!) Plus - just look at all those "Year-End-Lists" populating every other culture-blog and hipster site across the internet. We're already …

Locals kick off the weekend by enjoying two bands at the Ferndale Public Library.
Bands Urban Prairie and Capital Street Basement Musicians played for a small but appreciative crowd of about 20 people at the Ferndale Public Library on Friday night as part of the library's First Stop Friday events. The shows are organized by Kelly Bennett, a circulation specialist at the library. All shows are free and open to the public. First Stop Friday happens the first Friday of each month at library. The next First Stop Friday is scheduled for Nov. 4, with doors open at 6:30 p.m. for the 7-9 p.m. Correction: The next First Stop Friday is Nov. 4.
