Easy Like Sundae Offers Cool Treats

Ferndale business sells Self-Serve Non-Fat Frozen Yogurt Sundaes, smoothies and more.

The weather is slowly warming up and those looking for a treat might want to stop in Ferndale's Easy Like Sundae. The frozen yogurt business started up last summer and specializes in cool treats Owner Aaron Stone recently submitted information through the Patch Small Business Spotlight. Here are his answers. How did your business come to be?  Noticing the popularity of Frozen Yogurt Shoppes throughout the country and seeing the trend was slow to get to Michigan, I saw a great opportunity to start a great new business that had very few stores like it in the whole state. I always wanted to start my own business so combining that with the growing trend and popularity of this style of business I decided to take a shot and start Easy Like …

One-Eyed Betty's Finds Fast Friend in Downtown Ferndale

Just a few weeks since its opening on Super Bowl Sunday, the beer bar and kitchen has quickly found a following.

One-Eyed Betty's seems to have found a fast friend in downtown Ferndale. Just three weeks since its opening, the new bar and restaurant has found its niche in the community among lovers of craft beer and those who just can't resist a dish called "Bacon With a Side of Bacon." The packed crowd you'll find most nights at the former Cantino Diablo's spot on West Troy Street is just one proof of the new hangout's following. With 36 Yelp reviews, 1,145 Facebook fans and 454 check-ins, the collective voice around town seems to be saying one thing: welcome home, Betty. "The atmosphere is exactly what Ferndale is all about," said resident Walt Szymborski, who has visited Betty's a few times since its opening. "It's comfortable, it's inviting, it's …

I took a bunch of co-workers visiting from Amsterdam there a few weeks ago and they really enjoyed it. One guy from Germany was surprised to find a beer he normally doesn't see outside of Berlin.   more ›

AJ's Music Cafe Plans to Close at End of March

AJ O'Neil, owner of the downtown Ferndale coffee shop that brings in local artists, says he can't keep up with rising costs.

The Ferndale music cafe that has been in the spotlight over the past five years for its support of local artists, initiatives to support local autoworkers and its recent longest-concert-ever event, tentatively plans to close its doors at the end of March. AJ's Music Cafe has been a popular spot downtown to stop in to hear a local musician sing or hear poetry readings, for college students to study and local artists to hang their work. But owner AJ O'Neil says he can't keep up with rising costs as business slows down. He says he is working 70-hour weeks and trying to maintain $3,100 rent on income of around $250 a week the past four years. “And I'm not complaining. I'm just saying I can't keep doing that. I'm real proud of what we've done …

I always thought it cool that there was a place like AJ's for the arts and music. I even took part in it a couple of times. But by the lack of any type of real effort to get any attention for its business, I assumed that it had a way of doing very well for itself business-wise. I see I was wrong about that. But I dont think it was because of any political affiliation he has that the business was …   more ›

Former Emily's Chef to Open Local Kitchen and Bar in Ferndale

Rick Halberg says he'll feature 'familiar food done extremely well' in the casual restaurant in the former Via Nove space.

A new restaurant is coming to Ferndale that will utilize as much locally grown food as possible to create “extremely well-crafted comfort food.” Chef Rick Halberg, the owner and chef for the upscale Emily's restaurant in Northville that closed in December, is finalizing plans to open Local Kitchen and Bar, a casual restaurant in the location of the former Via Nove restaurant on Nine Mile Road. Via Nove closed in late December. Halberg said he wanted to open a more casual restaurant and thought Ferndale would be the perfect location. “We wanted to do something community based and real urban,” he said. “I'm not in the fine dining business any longer and it's a great location for us, it's a perfect corner.” And, he said, “Ferndale is hopping…
