Ferndale Library Recommends: Dar's Power List

Ferndale Librarian Darlene Hellenberg breaks it down to the BIGGEST, BEST books of her life... No easy task, if you know her at all. Here's some essentials!

* Dar's a marvel. I don't know how she's able to rattle off such proper, on-the-nose picks for each person who might be looking for what to read next - and still keep her brain storming up new programming ideas to engage the community - like, say, a city-wide book club we call Ferndale Reads.  Anyway, when I wanna talk-books, I talk to FPL Reference Librarian Darlene Hellenberg. These are scenes struck from some dorked-out devotee's rap session ala- High Fidelity or some idyllic Shop Around The Corner where we share possible Best-Of listings of titles and authors.  We've never zeroed-in on just-WHAT-a finalized list, an all-time-Best-Of- might look like...  But this week, even amid her preparations for kicking-off Ferndale Reads 2013 (…

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Kathleen's Sensible Selections

Insights on Synesthetes to Soup, and even "Sh*t" someone's dad says, our commendable Library Page Kathleen has quite a blend for this week's recommendations.

Kathleen Hellenberg works the morning shift here at the Library as a Page. We're lucky to have her too, as she has a knack for neatness and organization and has consistently displayed hearteningly dedicated service (not just to the orderliness of our shelves) but to the Library itself, its staff and patrons.  That, among our regular weekly recommendations, Kathleen's picks really run the gamut - definitely something for everyone here, enjoy:  By Kathleen Hellenberg THE DESCENDANTS DVD DRAMA How refreshing to watch a movie whose male lead does not use violence when confronting the man who had an affair with his wife. George Clooney's character's wife is in a coma following a boating accident and will soon die. He seeks out her lover to give…

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Ed Selects Multi-Tasking Movie-Stars

Our resident cinema specialist (and Head Reference Librarian) selects the successful triple (if not double) threats in Entertainment, writing, directing and acting under one project.

If I ever wanna talk-movies, I go to Ed; particularly when it comes to the classics, but also when I want to be assured that the opinions and insights provided are of a fine taste.  Our Head of Reference at the Ferndale Public Library is as knowledgeable of the cinema as he is capable in the art of Library Science, (not to mention dependable, as he has twice risen to the temporary rank of ad-hoc Director to steer the FPL ship through times of transition). This week, Ed thought he was just going to pick at-random but discovered an underlying theme halfway through. Listen up: ~ By Ed Burns I had no particular theme in mind this go-around. I was just going to feature some recent acquisitions that I particularly enjoyed watching. But, as I was…

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Tracy's Fave Holiday Films

Need something new to screen for your own personal marathon of holiday DVDs?

Tracy Wilson is a recent graduate of Wayne State University's School of Library and Information Science. Tracy helps out as a Substitute Librarian at the Ferndale Public Library from time to time, and we're always happy to have her.  Like cookies, office parties and jingles blaring through mall-speakers soundtracking mad-dash-shoppers - the "Christmas Movie" is a tradition-onto-itself, often employed to blow off some steam with a bit of hysterical laughter, mushy romance or poignant drama. By Tracy Wilson With the holiday season upon us, I thought I would recommend my favorite Christmas movies / specials. All are available at the Ferndale Public Library. Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas DVD CHILDRENS - D The animated version …

These are some good titles. I'm especially a huge fan of A Christmas Story, Love Actually, and Scrooged. There's also something to be said for watching all the different versions of A Christmas Carol (the musical with Albert Finney is weird as can be, but good, for example.) I think the only one I can say you guys missed as far as my traditions go that I never miss out on watching is A Charlie …   more ›

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Jessica's Picks

Get to know our new director. Jessica Keyser suggests the newest titles by her long-held favorites (one of which just recently won the National Book Award! Fine taste, indeed).

Hello again, from the Ferndale Public Library. This round of personal picks is special since it introduces our new Director, Jessica Keyser. Jessica comes to us from the Hazel Park Memorial Library where she served as director for almost three years. Though she's intoned warm reverence for her time spent, the staff and the community back there, she's particularly excited to settle into our community, here with our own quirky staff, working as the library director of her current hometown! A born and raised Michigander, Jessica attained her master's degree in Library Science from Wayne State University in 2008. When she can find the time between work and family, Jessica's an avid reader and a sporadic writer (also an English Major). It's no …

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Jillean's Picks

Head of Youth Services Jillean McCommons props Peace with this week's picks - from a cute vegetable-themed allegorical picture book to the biography of Alfred Nobel. Peace on Earth (through books!).

Hello again, from your local library. The Ferndale Public Library was recently honored/humbled to have received a $1500 grant from Peace Action of Michigan. This generous gift allowed us to expand our materials (for adults and children, on Book, CD, DVD and Audiobook), dealing with various peace issues.   With the Holidays approaching, our hearts and minds long for not just a little, but a lot of peace-on-Earth (and an equal share of good will towards all). To commemorate that sentiment, and the donations of Peace Action of Michigan, Youth Services Librarian Jillean McCommons has picked her preferred Peace books for your own perusing. By Jillean McCommons These are my favorite books about peace from a collection we recently purchased …

A Holiday Thought... Aren't humans amazing? They kill wildlife - birds, deer, all kinds of cats, coyotes, beavers, groundhogs, mice and foxes by the million in order to protect their domestic animals and their feed. Then they kill domestic animals by the billion and eat them. This in turn kills people by the million, because eating all those animals leads to degenerative - and fatal - health …   more ›

Ferndale Public Library Staff Recommends: Kelly's Audiobook Favorites

Another round of personal picks presented for your consideration of recreational/enlightening engagement by the Ferndale Library staff. This week, Head of Circulation Kelly Bennett offers up some audiobooks that have provided many a driveway moment.

I am a huge fan and proponent of the audiobook. I know there's a lot of naysayers out there, but for me, with my busy life and my tendency to give up on reading paper books before I make it 10 pages in, the audiobook has been a godsend. They keep me reading long after I would have returned a book and add an extra incentive to doing mundane household chores. I've read everything from classics, to non-fiction, from horror to Pulitzer prize winners. Here's a few that I've loved and would make a good entrance into the world of audiobooks. Click the provided links to place a hold on any of the audiobooks below.   Read by Steven Weber  Available via interlibrary loan This book had been on my "to read" list for years; likely since I had seen the …

Daniel, Thanks so much for your comment! I too listened to The Gunslinger and loved it. I'm scared to listen to the rest of the series because I've heard so much about the disappointing ending...maybe I'll just have to make the leap. Next time you're in, we'll have to swap more favorites. Thanks, Kelly   more ›

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Dar's Memorized Movies

Another in our ongoing series of staff suggestions from amid the shelves of your local library - Reference Librarian Darlene Hellenberg replays her favorites and acts along with them...

Darlene Hellenberg (Reference Librarian) is usually our go-to "recommend-er" when it comes to fine Fiction works - new & old.  This week, though, she's putting the books down and returning to her most favorite of favorite-est films - the ones she's seen 17 times (or more) - and can thus recite or reenact almost all of the (if not every) scene(s).  She and I often pary swashbuckling satirical jargon from Princess Bridge or bandy about macabre quips from Beetlejuice. Oh beloved 80's classics.  By Darlene Hellenberg While I tend to read a lot of serious literary fiction I love watching every type of movie under the sun.  I love chick flicks and dramas, comedies and science fiction, action and The following selections have been my favorites …

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Kathleen's Picks

Another round of personal picks presented for your consideration of recreational/enlightening engagement by the staff at the Ferndale Library. This week, Library Page Kathleen Hellenberg offers a blend of humor, spiritual insight and little-known history.

Kathleen, our dependably delightful, exceptionally attentive Library Page, has a keen eye towards the upkeep of our collection's browseability. If you haven't seen or met her yet, it's because she's often working the early shift, but she's an enthusiastic, well-read/well-versed individual (an ordained minister, to boot!) with a lot of charm. Her daughter, Reference Librarian Darlene, often refers to her as "Dr. Mom" because of her efficiency in prescribing holistic cures to daily ailments. Kathleen's got a refreshingly eclectic taste that spans absurdist humor, to operatic pop ballads, to memoir-ish novels of love and nature. By Kathleen Hellenberg Non-fiction (Humor): This Is A Book by Demetri Martin.  Sometimes, we all just need to read …

Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Eve's Picks

A series featuring personal picks, insightful titles and reading recommendations from various staff members at the Ferndale Public Library. In this article, read about Circulation Specialist Eve Foley's top five recommendations.

Every other week, Ferndale Patch will feature the recommendations of various staff members at the Ferndale Public Library. This week, the library's Eve Foley gives her top five picks.  Eve Foley has been with the Ferndale Public Library through two moves, one flood and the library's astounding growth in size, circulation and as a center of the community. Foley has served the community as a Circulation Specialist for nearly five years; she checks out your books, movies and music, processes the DVDs before they hit the shelves, and is often the first smiling face you see when you enter the library. She's an 18-year resident of Ferndale, where she lives with her husband, two children, two cats and one dog.  1. A Good Year: Original Motion …
