we always spend time on cruise day looking at the old vehicles on Woodward and in downtown Ferndale - the friday night fire engine/police car parade was great - didn't see even one rowdy person the entire time! The close down on Saturday night was smooth because now everyone knows the drill and the street was cleared by 9:30 or so - another good experience at the cruise!   more ›

Getting to Beaumont Hospital Tricky During Woodward Dream Cruise

Alternate routes for emergency vehicles Saturday include mile roads, neighborhood streets, Coolidge Highway and Greenfield Road, officials say.

There is no easy solution for public safety vehicles trying to access Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak during the Woodward Dream Cruise, officials say. Law enforcers and ambulance drivers do their best to avoid Woodward Avenue during the event – which is expected to attract 40,000 classic cars Saturday –  and would have to rely on their lights and sirens, along with the common sense of other motorists, to get through should an emergency occur on the historic roadway. "I do think, generally speaking, there is definitely a blind spot that the hospital is right there," said Laurie Thiel, CEO of Alliance Mobile Health, which provides ambulance service to Berkley, Oak Park, Huntington Woods, Beverly Hills and Troy. "There is not a clear-cut plan …

Lights and sirens seems to be lasting a long time. Sounds as if my house (2 blocks off Woodward) is in imminent danger of either a raging wildfire, or a high speed police chase. Awesome (not). I suppose if I were an eight year old, I'd think it was super-cool, rather than super-irritating.   more ›

Your Guide to the Woodward Dream Cruise 2012

Here's a roundup of events happening this week in Patch towns along the historic avenue leading up to the classic car parade Saturday.

The muscle cars, street rods, collector- and special-interest vehicles have been roaring down Woodward Avenue for months in anticipation of the Woodward Dream Cruise, which officially kicks off this week on historic Woodward Avenue. “As soon as the weather gets warm, people start cruising,” said Tina Stefanski of Caribou Coffee on Woodward in Royal Oak. “We'll get people that come in from out of state weeks before the Cruise.” More than 50,000 cruisers are expected to hit the pavement from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday during the 18th annual Woodward Dream Cruise, which began in 1995 in Ferndale as a fundraiser for a soccer field. That year, 250,000 people showed up to reminiscence about the glory days of cruising down Woodward Avenue, one of …
