Woodward Dream Cruise Has Regional Economic Payoff

The event will generate approximately $56 million for businesses in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties – as well as international exposure for the area – but some merchants along the route say their sales take a dive during the event.

The Woodward Dream Cruise brings big bucks and international exposure to communities along the historic avenue each August, but business owners say the event is a blessing and a curse. The cruise benefits the region as a whole – with hotels and restaurants throughout Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties coming out as winners – but results in soft sales and shuttered doors for many merchants along the 16-mile parade route that stretches from Ferndale to Pontiac. Michael O'Callaghan, executive vice president and COO of the Detroit Metro Convention & Visitors Bureau, said Friday that the Dream Cruise – which is expected to attract 1.5 million people – brings in approximately $56 million for businesses in the three-county area. "The real true …

I am on the "like it" side of the Dream Cruise. However, there is an aspect of it that is not "Oh well, it happens every year, it is out of our control, and there is nothing we can do about it." And that would be the city's decision to close down 9 mile from Planavon to Hilton. The city does not have to do this. They do it by choice. The Dream Cruise would still go through Ferndale via Woodward …   more ›

What's New at the 2012 Woodward Dream Cruise

From a "Cars in Art" attraction in Ferndale to a 5K in Royal Oak, find out what's debuting at this year's cruise.

So you think you know the Dream Cruise? Here's something you might not have seen before: Tattoo artists making art on cargo vans. That's one of many attractions debuting at this year's Woodward Dream Cruise. [Guide to the 2012 Dream Cruise here.] Here's a look at what else is new this year, from Ferndale to Bloomfield Hills and in between. Two unique attractions are featured for the first time this year as part of Ferndale's three-day cruise: Cars in Art and Restoration Academy, both taking place on Nine Mile Road. Cars in Art will feature local tattoo artists painting automotive murals on the body of cargo vans. Restoration Academy is a team of Metro Detroit students and retired automotive engineers who will build a classic car on …

Open or Closed? Ferndale Businesses Share Dream Cruise Strategies

Find out which businesses along Nine Mile Road and Woodward Avenue are embracing the cruise and which are closing down shop until it's over - and why.

Should I stay or should I go? It's the question many Ferndale business owners face every year around Dream Cruise time. For some, the influx of an anticipated 1.5 million people to the historic avenue for the annual Woodward Dream Cruise means a chance to have a busy, profitable weekend. Other business owners close down due to concerns over traffic, lack of parking or customers only coming in to use the restroom. At Rouge, a makeup and nail studio on Woodward in Ferndale, owner Cheryl Salinas-Tucker says her customers who called about appointments for this Saturday changed their minds once they realized it was Dream Cruise weekend - which reinforced her decision to close that day. "Really it's because no one can get to my business," she …

If your adult children (The Magic Bag is not a kid venue) need mommy to tell them where they can and can't go and are so upright that they can't take a joke then I maintain my belief that they are NOT the target audience for the Magic Bag. I'm not affiliated with them other than as a patron, so I can't speak for them, but I have taken the time to review their rationale for the sign and related …   more ›

Woodward Dream Cruise a Nightmare for Some

Residents and business owners who are fed up with the event and the activity that precedes it sound off on Facebook.

The Woodward Dream Cruise is expected to attract 1.5 million people to a 16-mile stretch of the historic avenue this Saturday – with the build-up stretching out for days, weeks and months in advance – creating a nightmare of gridlock and noise that has inspired some residents and businesses along the route to voice their disdain on Facebook. Many of those who take issue with the classic car parade on social media say they soured on the event once it began to affect their qualilty of life beyond just the day of the cruise. The Cruisers Go Home page created by Pleasant Ridge resident Jeanne Ruzzin, for example, had nearly 200 likes Tuesday and lively conversation. Ruzzin said it's not the Dream Cruise that she and her neighbors along the …

Slogan Contest Lets Woodward Neighbors Blow Off Dream Cruise Steam

The Magic Bag in Ferndale will accept submissions until noon Wednesday; the winner will receive a ticket prize pack and see their message on the venue's marquee this weekend.

Participants in the annual Woodward Dream Cruise slogan contest at The Magic Bag in Ferndale have until noon Wednesday to submit their best snarky saying about the classic car parade for a chance to see their words on the venue's marquee and win a ticket prize pack. The contest is intended to give residents and business owners along the route a way to voice their frustrations with the Saturday event that is expected to attract 1.5 million visitors to a 16-mile stretch of Woodward Avenue including Ferndale, Royal Oak, Huntington Woods, Berkley, Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills. Magic Bag owner Jeremy Haberman said that, over the years, the venue has tried a variety of ways to capitalize on the event – including booking Bo Diddley; renting …
