Ferndale school officials will take a closer look at the district's alternative high school at a study session expected to be held soon. The Digital Learning Center at 427 Allen, formerly known as the Taft Education Center, opened last fall offering an online-based curriculum with in-person support by academic case managers. Five students were arrested and police are searching for another after a fight on Thursday at Ferndale's Digital Learning Center that left one administrator injured. According to a news release from Ferndale Police, a group of students were involved in a fight in the school’s main hallway on Thursday morning. The fight, according to the release, is believed to have started as the result of students taunting each other. Administrators and staff in the school contained the fight; however it resulted in an injury to one administrator, police said. Two teens were arrested around 10 a.m. Feb. 12.
Ferndale Police arrested two 18-year-olds on Tuesday after police said they resisted arrest and one of them reached for a gun from his backpack as he ran from an officer. Around 10 a.m. Feb. 12, a Ferndale officer was flagged down by a woman who pointed out two people who she said were smoking marijuana in the bus stop at Eight Mile and Livernois, according to a news release from Ferndale Police. The officer approached the two individuals, who the officer knew by name as Bria Nicole White, 18, of Detroit; and Rondale Tyric Byrd, 18, of Detroit. Four teens were arrested following the incident, which occurred around 11 a.m. Wednesday, the Daily Tribune reports.
Ferndale Police arrested four teenagers on Wednesday after a student at Ferndale's Digital Learning Center was robbed while walking toward the school, according to an article in the Daily Tribune. The suspects reportedly implied they had a weapon and stole the student's laptop. The laptop was recovered when the suspects were arrested but no weapon was found, the newspaper reports. Residents of the Dales neighborhood met with school officials Wednesday night to continue a conversation started last month focusing on concerns over the Digital Learning Center. The public forum was held at the Ferndale school at 427 Allen - formerly known as the Taft Education Center but which became the DLC this fall - and provided an overview of concerns expressed at the last meeting, an update on some recent changes at the school and an opportunity for residents to share additional comments. A forum for the Dales neighborhood was held at the former Taft Education Center Thursday evening.
More than 50 residents of the Dales neighborhood, along with city and school officials, packed the media library at the Digital Learning Center Thursday evening for a meeting about the school. The public forum was initiated by neighbors who have had concerns over recent criminal activity that happened outside of the school on Allen Street, formerly known as the Taft Education Center. Residents in The Dales are invited to a meeting Thursday evening with the Ferndale police chief and school district superintendent.
A neighborhood meeting will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15 to discuss changes at the Taft Education Center. The event will be held at Taft - home of the new Digital Learning Center, an alternative high school that opened this year offering students an online-based curriculum with support from academic case managers. The meeting on Thursday will give residents in the Dales neighborhood a chance to meet their neighbors, learn about recent changes at the center and voice any concerns they may have. Police said a 17-year-old student attacked another student who is a member of a rival gang, according to an article in the Daily Tribune.
A student at Ferndale's Digital Learning Center was charged Friday with felony assault after a gang-related fight at the school, according to the Daily Tribune. The 17-year-old student reportedly attacked another student who is a member of a rival gang at about 1 p.m. Thursday near the entrance doors to the school gymnasium, the newspaper reports. The student, who was charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and is jailed on a $25,000 bond, may have been armed with a knife or half of a pair of scissors at the time of the assault, according to the article. The alternative high school, which opened this year, is located at 427 Allen. Last week, six students were arrested at the Digital Learning Center after a fight outside the school.
