Weekend Planner: Celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.'s Life and More

Whether it's reflecting on the civil rights leader's contributions to our nation, exploring a winter wonderland or meeting the author of "Detroitland," there are plenty of activities on tap in our area.

This weekend's cold weather – starting with snow showers and a low of 22 degrees today, according to a National Weather Service forecast – may inspire area residents to stay indoors and reflect on one of our nation's most inspirational leaders, Martin Luther King Jr., who will be honored with a federal holiday Monday. Several communities are marking the holiday with events, assemblies and peace marches. Roosevelt Primary School in Ferndale, for example, is planning a Peace Walk on Friday and an MLK Peace Walk is planned Monday at Hope United Methodist Church in Southfield.
