Ferndale Power Outages: Q&A Part 2 With DTE Rep

DTE Energy responds to some of the questions commonly asked by local residents concerned about power outages.

Power outages in Ferndale continue to be a source of concern for many local residents, with the recent storm-related outages fresh on the minds of many plus several pockets of unexplained outages popping up over the past few weeks. "I am so frustrated with all these random power outages," Patch reader Tamara Lowery recently wrote on Ferndale Patch's Facebook page. "Yes, even in the middle of a perfectly calm night, Ferndale loses power," wrote reader Brian Clark during an outage over the weekend. DTE officials recently provided a power update to City Council, detailing recent improvements to the system and their plans to build a new substation in the city to service new growth in the area and improve reliability. City officials are also …

Anyone expecting a straight answer from DTE is going to be sorely disappointed. It's fairly obvious now that their reps will say and do whatever it takes to avoid blame on their side. If they truly want to make amends- make themselves more reputable- they can start giving accurate estimates for when power will be restored. I don't care if you say a week from now, since at least I'll know. But if …   more ›

Power Outages in Ferndale: Q&A with DTE Rep

DTE representative Scott Simons discusses the recent outages and explains how restoration is prioritized.

More than 2,500 DTE Energy customers in Ferndale were without power at one point last week after severe thunderstorms hit the area July 4. By Monday evening, the number of customers in the city still without power was down to 57. The storms affected more than 300,000 customers in southeast Michigan and caused more than 1,000 downed power lines. Service has now been restored to more than 98 percent of those who lost power. DTE officials have recognized problems with the system in Ferndale and recently provided a power update to City Council, detailing recent improvements to the system and their plans to build a new substation in the city to service new growth in the area and improve reliability. Ferndale City Manager April Lynch said on …

Wouldn't it make sense to start putting those power lines underground? These power outages from storms are going to continue to happen with the way those lines are now. Its inhumane for people to have no power for days in 100 degree temperatures. What are the consequences for DTE for causing people to suffer like this? Nothing? They are a monopoly. What choice does a citizen have in the land of …   more ›

Power Outages Continue in Ferndale

As of late Sunday night, 410 DTE customers in Ferndale were still without power. How are you handling the outages?

DTE's outage map showed 410 customers still without power as of late Sunday night - down significantly from earlier Sunday when more than 1,200 customers were without power. The largest remaining outage area has an estimated restoration time of between 9:30-11:30 a.m. Monday. View the outage map here. While some areas have been without power since the severe thunderstorms July 4, residents in certain parts of Ferndale have reported losing power days later, or having their power restored briefly only to lose it again. Last year, DTE offered a $25 credit to residents who filed a claim after an outage. "You better believe we'll be applying for a credit," wrote Patch reader Kathryn on Ferndale Patch's Facebook page on Friday. "My new goal for …

DTE: Ferndale Power Outage on Monday Caused by 'Equipment Failure'

An area outage on Monday morning affected 790 customers. Have you been affected by recent power outages?

An area power outage on Monday morning affecting 790 customers in Ferndale was caused by "equipment failure," according to DTE Energy spokesman Scott Simons. The outage was mostly resolved by early afternoon, but a DTE power outage map late Monday night showed 70 customers in other areas of the city without power. Simons could not be more specific about what type of equipment failure caused the outage but said the system has been working well considering the unusually high temperatures. "This is the first [larger] outage this summer and after almost two weeks of 90-degree temperatures, the system has been working very well," he said Monday afternoon. "We have had isolated situations where there have been power outages but it's not strictly…

I'm on West Webster and saw the FFD roping off the area with the down wire. Second outage in a week. I never lost electrical power when I lived in Rochester, and suffer one while living in Grand Blanc. However, I NEVER had any power outage while living in Detroit (streetlights different story--those are covered by PLC, not DTE).   more ›

DTE regional representatives present an 'electrical system health check' update at Ferndale City Council meeting.

DTE Energy is moving forward with plans to build an additional substation in Ferndale, according to an update from regional representatives at the Ferndale City Council meeting Monday night. DTE Energy Regional Manager Michael Palchesko and DTE Supervising Engineer Ron Gerkin attended the meeting and presented an "Electrical System Health Check" for southeast Oakland County. Gerkin said power in the city of Ferndale has been more reliable with recent improvements made to the system such as tree-trimming, pole-top maintenance and other updates. "The reliability of Ferndale and the area has been much better. It hasn't been perfect but we haven't lost entire substations and the times that we have had outages they've been relatively quickly …

Filed under FWIW: I've talked with 5 people today who recieved phone calls from DTE asking their opinion about the service and what happened yesterday. When all 5 of them started to talk about how unsatisfied they were with the company and the amount of outages within the past year, the DTE rep immediately hung up on them. Something needs to be done, right now. Where is Covey on this? I suggest …   more ›
