DDA Plans to Establish Downtown Ferndale as Art District

"ARTWN" will add a 10-piece public art installation downtown next month and will feature a variety of summertime events.

The Downtown Development Authority is launching a new program that aims to appease Ferndale residents' growing interest in art around their community. The spring initiative called ARTWN will feature a 10-piece art installation set up around the downtown district to help establish it as an art town. DDA Executive Director Cristina Sheppard-Decius said the program is an invitation for people to create and enjoy art “in one great place – downtown Ferndale.” The 10-piece exhibit, assembled by renowned curator John Sauve, will start changing the downtown Ferndale landscape late next month. Featuring the work of local and national sculptors, the pieces will be installed at locations throughout the district and remain in place through next year…

Guy, the original crowsnest was manned by a live police office to direct traffic at 9 mile and Woodward. This is a historical reproduction of that crowsnest (a part of Ferndale's history). Ferndale Council OKs Food Truck Rally, Undecided on Street Vendor Regulations

Parking pilot program and Secreto liquor license approved and more at Monday night's meeting.

After an hour of discussion Monday night, the Ferndale City Council decided to wait a couple of more weeks before acting on the regulation of street and mobile vendors while approving the Metro Detroit Street Eats food truck rally as a monthly event. Here are the highlights from Monday's council meeting: Members of City Council were rendered speechless at various points of Monday’s meeting during the final discussion of proposed restrictions to Ferndale’s street and mobile vendors. The Downtown Development Authority proposed a resolution regulating public vending spaces, in attempts to reduce the days and operation times of local street vendors, set fees for them and eliminate the option to use sandwich board signs. DDA Director Cristina …

What did the city council expect? They should never had thought getting the DDA's recommendation on this would be anything but biased against the street vendors and food trucks. It is a complete conflict of interest. The DDA gets all of its money through increased property taxes in the downtown. If they add extra competition against any new or present businesses that pay those taxes, they would …   more ›

Newly Approved Plan Aims to Keep Downtown Ferndale Bustling

'The development of our downtown is nothing short of remarkable,' Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter said. 'I think the TIF is the single biggest catalyst to making that happen.'

Ferndale City Council members approved a development plan this week that they believe will serve as a tool to keep downtown Ferndale bustling for the next 20 years. The amendment to the Ferndale Downtown Development and Tax Increment Financing Plan, which council passed unanimously Monday night, extends the 1981 TIF for an additional 20 years and updates the projects included in the plan. The DDA is funded through tax increment financing, or TIF, which is the ability to capture the incremental increase in property taxes that results from improvements in the district. Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter has lived in Ferndale for 21 years and said he has seen firsthand the benefits of the current TIF. “The development of our downtown is nothing …

AJ's Brought 'Special Vibe' to Ferndale, Say Artists, Customers Sad to See it Close

Since the owner of the music cafe announced he'll close his doors in March, calls and good wishes have flowed in. It's all very kind, AJ O'Neil says, but 'I'm exhausted' and it's time to go.

Customers and supporters of AJ's Music Cafe registered their sadness, appreciation and good wishes after hearing of the cafe's tentative plans to close on March 31, but the artsy coffee house owner says he's "exhausted" and it's time to move on. “AJ has brought his own special vibe with his Assembly Line concert and his clear-cut desire to help the working man,” Ferndale Downtown Development Authority communications manager Chris Hughes said Wednesday. “He's been a wonderful asset to downtown Ferndale and he certainly did help put Ferndale on the map in many ways.” Despite the name AJ's has made for itself in the community with its fundraising events, initiatives to support local autoworkers and its world-record-breaking longest concert …

Have you noticed more recycling bins popping up at your favorite Ferndale businesses? If not, you might soon. According to the Southeastern Oakland County Resource Recovery Authority, an initiative to encourage more commercial recycling is already well under way in Ferndale. As part of the program, SOCRRA is offering free recycling containers to Ferndale  businesses for a limited time. Ferndale DDA director Cristina Sheppard-Decius said the DDA has been working to increase recycling downtown and has teamed up with SOCRRA for this program. “Our issue has always been that we have new businesses all the time and they don’t always realize that there is this opportunity to recycle,” said Sheppard-Decius.
