Blood Drive to Honor Memory of Late Ferndale Student

Event on May 13 will honor Mario Campbell, a Ferndale High School junior who died during track practice in March.

A blood drive will be held in May dedicated to the memory of late Ferndale High School student Mario Campbell. The high school is hosting the special Red Cross Blood Drive from 8 a.m. to 1:45 p.m. on Monday, May 13 in the school's media center, according to the school district's most recent newsletter. Campbell, 16, died March 14 after collapsing at school following a training practice with the track team. The junior was remembered as a "wonderful student, enthusiastic learner, team player and dedicated friend," FHS Principal Lisa Williams said in March. "He always had a smile on his face and a good word to share." Blood drive donors will be entered to win a Detroit Tigers family four-pack of tickets and/or a $200 gift card. For more …

Red Cross: Blood Donations Needed to Help Communities Affected by Hurricane Sandy

Red Cross urges blood donations in unaffected areas across the country as emergency responders assess damage from Hurricane Sandy.

Editor's note: This article was submitted by the Southeastern Michigan Blood Services Region of the American Red Cross. Hurricane Sandy has forced the cancellation of approximately 300 American Red Cross blood drives in 14 states along the East Coast, resulting in a shortfall of more than 9,000 units of blood and platelet donations. All eligible donors in unaffected parts of the country are encouraged to roll up a sleeve and give blood or platelets. “Just as Red Cross volunteers have mobilized to provide disaster relief and other emergency assistance, we are mobilizing blood and platelets donations to ensure patients have access to the potentially lifesaving blood products they need,” said Diane E. Blood donations are in high demand and the Gerry Kulick Community Center is hosting a Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday. Head over between 12:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. and join the Red Cross in its mission to maintain a safe and stable blood supply. The Ferndale City Council meets tonight.
