Photos: Bike Night in Downtown Ferndale

The city's first on-street bike parking rack, which accommodates 14 bikes in the space of one parking spot, was revealed last Thursday night during Bike Night.

Downtown Ferndale hosted Bike Night last Thursday, which featured the reveal of the city's first on-street bike parking rack. The bike rack was created by local sculptor Richard Gage and accommodates 14 bikes in the space of one parking spot. It's the first of six on-street racks the DDA plans to install throughout the district. The Downtown Ferndale Bike Shop offered free bike safety checks, and residents could apply for a bike license with the Ferndale Police Auxiliary. Chris Hughes, communications manager for the Ferndale DDA, said it was a great night for downtown Ferndale for many reasons - including seeing the first on-street bike rack finally be put in place, to the public art aspect and the community partners like Western Market …

Ferndale Bicycle Night to Feature Unveiling of New Bike Rack

Bike shop to offer free safety checks and group bike ride and new women's cycling group to meet as part of the DDA's Third Thursdays initiative.

Downtown Ferndale will host Bike Night on Thursday, part of the Downtown Development Authority's new ARTWN program that aims to feed Ferndale residents' growing interest in art around their community. Bicycle Night will feature the reveal of the DDA’s first on-street bike parking rack, which will accommodate 14 bikes in the space of one parking spot. Created by local sculptor Richard Gage, the rack is the first of six on-street racks the DDA plans to install throughout the district. “A good number of our consumers are dedicated bicycling commuters. Ferndale Councilwoman Starts New Bike Group – But No Spandex Allowed

Just in time for Bike Night on Thursday, Ferndale Mayor Pro Tem Melanie Piana is starting a new cycling group to celebrate "riding in everyday clothing."

If you ask Ferndale Mayor Pro Tem Melanie Piana how often she rides her bike, she might not have an exact answer for you. That's because for Piana, bicycling is just part of everyday life. She usually bikes to work at the Michigan Suburbs Alliance located above the Pearle Vision in Ferndale, and you can count on seeing her bike parked outside Ferndale City Hall during council's Monday night meetings. She isn't keeping track of the miles, she's just getting where she needs to go - and she enjoys every minute of it. "I love the feeling of being on my bike- the wind in my hair, the sounds of our community," she says, mentioning the added benefit of not paying for parking.
