Ferndale Non-Profit Offers Free Tax Assistance

New self-service option available this year for residents with income up to $57,000.

A non-profit organization in Ferndale is continuing to offer free income tax services to local residents, along with a new self-service option available for the first time this year. The Oakland Neighborhood Tax Center, located at 1956 Hilton, is run by the Detroit-based Accounting Aid Society and provides free income tax preparation services with eligibility based on annual income. Income limits are up to $50,000 for families and up to $35,000 for individuals, according to Vicky Billington, communications coordinator with the Accounting Aid Society. U.S. Rep. Sander Levin Visits Volunteers at Ferndale Tax Center

A month before the IRS tax filing deadline, Levin stops in the Accounting Aid Society’s Neighborhood Tax Center, which serves low- and middle-income families.

A month before Tax Day, U.S. Rep. Sander Levin visited the Accounting Aid Society’s Neighborhood Tax Center in Ferndale on Tuesday to meet with volunteers as they helped prepare tax returns for low- and middle-income families. The Accounting Aid Society – one of the oldest Volunteer Income Tax Assistance programs in the country – provides tax assistance and promotes economic self-sufficiency to families, seniors and others in need through volunteerism and partnerships. Last year, the society had 674 volunteers who helped more than 20,000 people to receive $24.4 million in total tax refunds and credits.
