Ferndale DDA Seeks Blowout Volunteers

A fundraiser to benefit ARTWN, a public art initiative, will be held during the local music festival May 2-4 at The Rust Belt Market.

The Ferndale Downtown Development Authority needs volunteers to help out May 2-4 at The Rust Belt Market during the Metro Times Blowout, which will come to Ferndale for the first time this year. The 16th annual local music festival kicks off April 25 in Detroit, continues April 26-27 in its traditional Hamtramck home and wraps up next weekend in Ferndale. "Help us raise funds for ARTWN (pronounced Art Town), a public art initiative for Downtown Ferndale. All funds raised at the bar inside the Rust Belt Market goes towards the legacy of public art," the DDA website says. "Volunteers are needed for tending bar, selling drink tickets, checking id's, managing the bar area and ensuring visitors to Downtown Ferndale have rockin' good time." The …

Like It Or Not: Big Red Ram Debate Embraced by City

"This is the point," Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter said of the city's most-talked-about public art sculpture. "How boring would it be if we all had the same opinions and liked the same things?"

Don't knock the big red ram. Or actually, go right ahead. It's fine either way, say leaders of the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority, who have been working hard over the past several months to bring more public art to the city. The red ram and 10 other sculptures recently intalled throughout town are part of the city's ARTWN initiative to add and showcase public art. Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter asked for a show of hands of who likes the red ram on Thursday evening during the initiative's big event held at the Rust Belt Market (see a photo gallery from the event here). While many guests at the event raised a hand in support of the ram, the mayor wasn't ashamed to admit that he isn't necessarily among the fans of the bright red …

PHOTOS: New Sculpture Unveiled, Ferndale Celebrates Public Art at Rust Belt

It was a "black tie and sneakers" event on Thursday evening as residents explored the city's 11 public art sculptures as part of the ARTWN initiative.

City leaders, business owners, artists and residents from across the area joined to support public art on Thursday evening at the Rust Belt Market for "ARTWN–The Event, Small Plates and Big Art." The event, held as part of the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority's ARTWN initiative, let residents explore and celebrate the 11-piece public art installation known as "ARTWN–The Exhibit." The event included guided sculpture tours, small plate offerings donated by local businesses, a silent auction and live music from the Nighthawks Jazz Orchestra. The unveiling of the 11th ARTWN sculpture, which is located outside the Rust Belt, was also featured. Cristina Sheppard-Decius, the DDA's executive director, spoke at the event and said public art …

Ferndale Gets New Public Art Sculptures

The 11-piece installation is part of the Ferndale DDA's ARTWN initiative. What do you think of the new sculptures?

You've probably noticed at least a few of the new sculptures that have been popping up around town over the past week or so. The pieces - among them a bright red ram and a sculptural rendition of a flamenco dancer - are part of an 11-piece public art installation included in the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority's ARTWN initiative to add and showcase public art. "ARTWN - The Exhibit" is sponsored by MotorCity Casino Hotel and the Ferndale DDA, with additional support from individual sculpture sponsors. New sculptures have been installed almost daily over the past several days, with the final piece being unveiled on June 28 at an official launch party for the two-year installation. "ARTWN - The Event, Small Plates and Big Art," will …

Ferndale Pedestrian Alley Entered in 'Placemaking' Contest

The South 9 Pedestrian Alley project would bring an accessible drinking fountain, landscaping, benches and art to the 20-foot-wide alley.

Ferndale is one of 46 communities around the state participating in "It’s About Place," a contest sponsored by Let’s Save Michigan that offers funding for “placemaking” projects. Placemaking projects are investments in public spaces for the purpose of community use. The winning participants will receive funding of up to $2,000 to build the projects they designed. Ferndale's South 9 Pedestrian Alley is one of the projects up for consideration, and the Ferndale Downtown Development Authority is urging residents to vote daily. The 20-foot-wide alley is a pedestrian connector located west of Woodward on the south side of Nine Mile connecting West Nine Mile and Troy Street. The DDA, as part of its downtown development plan, aims to make the …

I just voted, but we are 13th. We need a lot of votes if we want to crack the top ten. More than likely the DDA is going to spend some money on this project here. They are doing the art piece here regardless. Getting outside extra money in, doesn't hurt.   more ›

Ferndale Councilwoman Starts New Bike Group – But No Spandex Allowed

Just in time for Bike Night on Thursday, Ferndale Mayor Pro Tem Melanie Piana is starting a new cycling group to celebrate "riding in everyday clothing."

If you ask Ferndale Mayor Pro Tem Melanie Piana how often she rides her bike, she might not have an exact answer for you. That's because for Piana, bicycling is just part of everyday life. She usually bikes to work at the Michigan Suburbs Alliance located above the Pearle Vision in Ferndale, and you can count on seeing her bike parked outside Ferndale City Hall during council's Monday night meetings. She isn't keeping track of the miles, she's just getting where she needs to go - and she enjoys every minute of it. "I love the feeling of being on my bike- the wind in my hair, the sounds of our community," she says, mentioning the added benefit of not paying for parking. When she rides to work, she said, "I feel good and I'm awake and alert …

DDA Plans to Establish Downtown Ferndale as Art District

"ARTWN" will add a 10-piece public art installation downtown next month and will feature a variety of summertime events.

The Downtown Development Authority is launching a new program that aims to appease Ferndale residents' growing interest in art around their community. The spring initiative called ARTWN will feature a 10-piece art installation set up around the downtown district to help establish it as an art town. DDA Executive Director Cristina Sheppard-Decius said the program is an invitation for people to create and enjoy art “in one great place – downtown Ferndale.” The 10-piece exhibit, assembled by renowned curator John Sauve, will start changing the downtown Ferndale landscape late next month. Featuring the work of local and national sculptors, the pieces will be installed at locations throughout the district and remain in place through next year…

Guy, the original crowsnest was manned by a live police office to direct traffic at 9 mile and Woodward. This is a historical reproduction of that crowsnest (a part of Ferndale's history). If this link works, here is the original one at 9 Mile and Woodward. https://www.facebook.com/#!/photo.php?fbid=1348272945790&set=o.292344146288&type=3&theater   more ›
