Sci-Fi Book Club at Ferndale Library is a Scream

The discussion group explores the if's and how's, the uncanny's and technological terrors every third Tuesday.

I was quite excited after reading of Usul Maud'dib valiantly mounting and reining in a gargantuan sandworm to lead a storming charge of Fremen toward the Battle of Arrakeen that I wanted to talk about it with someone first thing the next day.  Right?! Yes, I finally read Dune by Frank Herbert; an iconic work of science fiction. I also recently read Stranger In A Strange Land by Robert Heinlein and now appreciate fully what it means to Grok ... And now I'm convinced of sci-fi's esteem in the literary world, its significance as a genre is distinguished by a advance employ of metaphor, its boundless imagination makes it the quintessential mode for fiction's characteristic enticement of escapism. Truly escapist (...out of this world or beyond …

Op-Ed: Nash Aims to Pass a Clean Environment on to Future Generations

The Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner plans additional oil drilling and fracking town hall meetings.

I want to thank the voters of Oakland County for their support of my candidacy for Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner. My time serving as Oakland County Commissioner was an honor and the most rewarding experience of my life. I have had the opportunity to serve with so many dedicated public servants and community volunteers, at the county, region, state and national levels. We can be truly proud of the people who work for us and those who volunteer in so many important capacities. From the beginning, I focused my efforts on green building and sustainability, both as county policies and in public/private planning and economic development efforts. I have worked with dedicated public employees in these areas also, through the …

What's That Red Logo on Facebook Pages Across the Country?

Here in Ferndale, many have followed suit, going red for marriage equality, by sharing the Human Rights Campaign's logo to show their support for LGBT equality in Michigan.

You may have wondered at the logo showing up all over Facebook — a red square with two pink horizontal lines and folks changing their profile photos to this symbol that stands for marriage equality. The equality symbol signifies that marriage equality really is all about love, the HRC post says, adding that in addition to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender supporters, heterosexuals are especially encouraged to do so as "straight allies." "Together we will show the nation that we believe all Americans deserve to be treated fairly and equally under the law — no matter who they love," …
