Warthog Piglets Daphne and Violet Blossom at Detroit Zoo

The piglets are "very cute," according to the curator of mammals.

Flowers aren’t the only things blooming at the Detroit Zoo. Daphne and Violet – female warthogs born April 7, 2013 – are now firmly planted in their African Grasslands habitat near the Africa Train Station.  The birth is the result of a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, a cooperative management program to ensure genetically healthy, diverse and self-sustaining populations of threatened and endangered species. There are currently just over a hundred warthogs in North American zoos.  “We’re excited to have these baby warthogs and to help this small population in zoos grow,” said Robert Lessnau, Detroit Zoological Society Curator of Mammals. “The piglets are very cute and we’re happy to …

Double Up Brings Custom Streetwear to Ferndale

"We want people to have fun with fashion," owner Ray Charles Colville says of the boutique that opened Friday on Woodward Avenue.

Double Up, a custom streetwear boutique that opened Friday at 22730 Woodward Ave. in Ferndale, will cater to customers with a creative bent and hip-hop sensibilities. Owner Ray Charles Colville of Ferndale, who also owns Double Up locations in Birmingham and East Lansing, said he hopes the high-end streetwear shop will serve as a "communications hub" where fashion, music and culture meet. Double Up will sell men's streetwear, hats and sneakers; provide custom tailoring for casual clothing; and put on in-store events featuring local musicians. Eventually, the boutique will sell a limited selection of women's clothing, as well, Colville said. "We want people to have fun with fashion. A lot of people take it so serious," he said. "That's why …

I have noticed that many new business that are popping up in Ferndale do not talyor their clothing or needs for residents of Ferndale, Royal Oak, or Birmingham. Last night, I walked past the store and this afternoon. Colville's store will bring more pain to the city than hope to the city.   more ›

'Play It Like You Mean It': Composer Teaches Ferndale Musicians a Life Lesson

The high school wind ensemble will premiere Pulitizer Prize-nominated Hollywood musician Ira Hearshen's commissioned piece "Eight Mile Rhythm" during the free Ferndale High School spring band concert at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 18.

Pulitizer Prize-nominated composer Ira Hearshen taught students about life, as well as music, during rehearsals this week for the Ferndale High School spring band concert. The wind ensemble will perform the premiere of Hearshen's commissioned piece "Eight Mile Rhythm" during the free Saturday concert, which also will feature the symphony band and the first alumni band performance in nearly 30 years. Hearshen – who has worked on music for television and films including "John Carter," "Super 8," "Cars 2," "A Bug’s Life," all the "Rush Hour" films and "Toy Story 2" – said "Eight Mile Rhythm" draws upon the following three Motown hits. “Having a piece commissioned is one of those things that music programs and directors aspire to, because it's…

Ferndale Library Recommends: 'Depressing ... Yet Humorous' Selections

That's the unintentional theme, this week, as our Circulation Specialist Kerrie Patterson spans Anime DVDs to emotional family drama fiction to post-punk compilations.

Here's another round of picks from the staff at the Ferndale Public Library. "The unintentional theme here is that everything is overall pretty depressing (whoops, maybe it's the weather)," Circulation Specialist Kerrie Patterson says. I dig Kerrie's style. Total professional, quite amicable and cheery in dealing with the public (despite her often black-centric wardrobe), yet charmed with a good sense of dry, dark humor. She's also opened up a lot of doors for me into the realms of awesome anime (Japanese manga/animation).  This week, she shows off her anime sensibilities while also paying homage to new-wave/post-punk pioneers Joy Division (as this week marks the passing of their iconic front man/songwriter Ian Curtis).  Who loves the sun…
