Pasty Named Michigan's State 'Sandwich' by Zagat
The meat- and potato-filled pastry is a U.P. staple, but it can be found at many shops and restaurants in Metro Detroit.
Is it fair to call a pasty a sandwich?
Zagat, the prominent restaurant rating survey, thinks so.
It named the meat- and potato-filled pastryMichigan's "state sandwich" in a recent feature called "50 States, 50 Sandwiches."
According to the article, a small influx of Finnish immigrants followed the Cornish miners into the upper peninsula of Michigan, and the pasty became a tradition for miners in the area to eat.
While this dish hails from the U.P., there are plenty of places to snag one in Metro Detroit. Check out the list below and celebrate the pasty this weekend.
But while we're playing so fast and loose with the definition of "sandwich," does anyone else think the Coney should have gotten a fair shot at the title?
