Is home insulation beneficial in the summer?

That would be a resounding, YES!!! There’s a common misconception that home insulation is a winter necessity, and that insulation does not have much effect in the summer.

We run our A/C in the summer to maintain a more comfortable, cooler and less humid environment in our homes. However, nature is constantly trying to reach a state of equilibrium, so the exterior heat is constantly trying to penetrate our homes, to achieve the same temperature as is occurring outdoors. While air sealing and insulation keeps heat IN during the winter, a properly sealed and insulated home also keeps heat OUT during the summer.

If your home is relatively old and generally not sealed and under insulated, typically your best first and probably cheapest step towards improving home comfort and cutting your energy spend would be to seal and insulate your attic. This keeps heat from rising up and out of your home during the winter and will help you avoid the second floor summer swelter. As the sun bakes down on your roof, any heat gain that transfers into your attic would be significantly slowed down in its ability to reach into your living space.
