Summer Reading at the Ferndale Library

Also check out a set of "farewell picks" recommended by our departing Page, Nicole Taylor.

School's out, and that means the Library's IN.

The textbooks are closed, the sun is out, it's time to have some fun and get down to some exciting reads (and some exciting programming) offered at the Ferndale Library.

"Summer Reading Loss" is what many sociologists consider the literary leakage that occurs between school sessions, a risk for kids who, essentially, turn off their brains in July and August and thus stunting their re-acceleration back into studies come next September. That's at the heart of our library's Summer Reading programming - to keep kids excited (and above all, engaged) by/with books and reading, whether recreational or academic.

Summer Reading sign-up starts June 18 and kids can sign up anytime (up until August 1). Stop in to find out about our various Reading Games age-applicable / grade-ranging / all-genre-inclusive (with book giveaways, author visits/discussions and other special hands-on activities).

We have a full calendar of programs available in our Kids Corner for kids, tweens, teens, young-adults, and yes, adults.

Summer Reading (and Summer Viewing/Listening)

One upcoming event (for adults) is our Movieable Feast series - an extension of last summer's similarly themed movie-nights where we pair foreign films with the corresponding cuisines native to the director/producer's home country. That starts Monday June 18 (with required registration).

After that, we have our Summer Concert Series starting off on June 25 featuring the Nighthawks Jazz Orchestra. (Later, in July, we've got an Elvis impersonator coming! a-thank-yuh-verry-much).

For kids, on June 22 we'll host a Pajama Party, led by entertainer Joel Tacey - The Pajama Jam Family Comedy Show fits in nicely with our "Dream Big" theme tied to kids' Reading Games. It's an after-hours Storytime, if you will: Wear your pajamas for a fun night of dazzling tricks and big surprises. (Inquire at the Kids Corner).

June 23 -join us for the reading of Schnauzers in Trousers, a children's picture book written by local author Katrina Jackson.

After that (June 28) we've got the Organization of Bat Conservation bringing your favorite nocturnal friends to the library -"Bats of the World" - "Learn the truth about bats and how they live!" (All ages, but Registration's required).

Our regularly-meeting book clubs will continue all summer, Storytime for kids, Tween the Pages for 5th-6th graders, Teen Remix and Book Parties.

And more Summer-Reading fun is on the way in July.

A few more staff picks

Come July, though, we'll have said goodbye to one of our staff. One of our Pages, , recently graduated from Ferndale High School and is heading up to Marquette for the summer to participate in an Upward Bound Math/Science Program.

Ms. Taylor requested the opportunity to post a farewell "Top 3" recommendations for Summer Reading/Viewing:

Nicole's Picks:

1. - The List -by Siobhan Vivian -
"I picked this becasue it is a book that shows the in-depth truth about being a girl in high school. Not only does it show the great and popular side, but it turns to show what it is like to be an "outsider" in high school."

2. - Kitchen Confidentiall -by Anthony Bourdain-
"I loved this book. This book was part of the reason that I wanted to go into the culinary field. Bourdain always had a way of turning the negative into a positive and he kept you laughing through the entire book."

3. -The Notebook (Movie) -directed by Nick Cassavetes / based on the Nicholas Sparks' novel.
"This is my all time favorite movie. (And I don't care what anyone says). This is the ultimate girly girl love story movie, but I still love it."

Taylor spent her last three summer vacations up at Northern Michigan University participating in Upward Bound Math-Science program taking classes to expand her knowledge, (particularly in the field of mathematics), and so, June 23 will be her last day at the Ferndale Public Library for the foreseeable future.

"I will miss the staff the most," Taylor said. "I always came to work and enjoyed the company that everyone had, I will miss all the jokes and laughs we shared, I will just miss the warm feeling I got when I was at work."
