Milo's Trip: Found Soundz: - Wildcatting / Electric Six / Doop and the Inside Outlaws
Ferndale-based band Duende will perform Saturday at The Loving Touch, plus find out what's planned for Pig and Whiskey July 14.
Duende are upping the ante.
The Ferndale-based quartet of psychedelic-outlaw-blues-benders are feeling on fire (in a good way) after wrapping an inspiring recording session at Tempermill Studios. They've got a whole album's worth of new material coming out later this year, with one song's session involving a half-dozen different musicians specializing in various genres and ranging in age and unique backgrounds harmonizing for a rousing collaborative effort.
Now they're bringing that amped energy to their monthly "Duensday" music nights; adding more bands to what's typically been a two-slot line-up and shifting their regularly-scheduled shindig from Wednesday (a holiday, this week) to the inherently-livelier time of Saturday night!

Yes, there’s a concert cage-match set between local psych-rock heavyweights like Duende and The High Strung: bonus-firework-displays for those who didn’t get their quota of sparkled spectacles, especially when you pile on the tumult of fibrous freak-noodlers like Wildcatting and the imposing dance-party percolations of garage-clattered funk quartet Electric Fire Babies.
Yes, it’ll be a zesty night Saturday at , topped by opening act Lucian Townes bringing his brand of blues and folk up from his native Toledo, OH.

Our four Michigan players (majority of their line-ups’ players being based around Ferndale) have been sharing stages on and off for five years now, so it’ll be a special night in that regard: reflective and maybe a bit nostalgic, since it's been more than a year since these busy spinning-tops and their hectic schedules could align for a good old night of rambunctious musical reverie.
We’re coming on just-about-a-full-year for Duende’s monthly residencies at the Loving Touch (always the first “Duenseday”). With the national holiday this week, the group decided to make it a blowout, line-up wise.
Samplings:
Duende – “Barefoot Bandit”
Electric Fire Babies – “Sugar Cube Castle”
Of particular note for this line-up is the re-emergence of Ferndale-based instrumental quartet Wildcatting -who otherwise form 80 percent of the quintet known as Bars of Gold. Wildcatting is-and-isn't Bars of Gold - one could summarize that they are the origin, the roots, the primordial soup - of Bars of Gold, but they've been, heretofore, less active than BoG, so this might be a rare chance to see them (as their song-set is independent of the material you'd hear through Bars of Gold). Just watch the video^

A week later on Sunday, July 14: Michigan-bred / Euro-revered / dance-rock manufacturers of suave-mania, The Electric Six, are headlining the street-stage for the Pig & Whiskey Festival (at Troy and Woodward).
Soundtracking the sampling of smoky treats and throat-stinging spirits will be other Ferndalian fuzz-rock avant-gardists such as Child Bite, along with the Hard Lessons, Illy Mack and many more. ->Info here.
The Electric Six, meanwhile, have released a new album every year, (always in October) for the last seven years in a row. This year, a commemoration of sorts marking the 10th anniversary of their album Fire and its breakout single "Danger! High Voltage" - they'll sort of take it a bit easier by releasing a compilation-album of live performances, later in the autumn.

But... If BBQ ain't your thing, there's still another fine show to check out a few blocks north that Saturday (7/14), at the Magic Bag: Stomping through with an outlaw-country, treble-charged swagger-rock is Flint-based Whitey Morgan & the 78’s. Check out their tunes on ReverbNation.
Joining them are Doop & the Inside Outlaws, a band, led by singer/songwriter Don "Doop" Duprie, that digs the twangy roots-rock sound somewhere out in the exhaust-swathed concrete of Detroit - displayed dynamically on their late-2011 album What Am I Supposed To Do?
--Inside-Outlaw's Katie Grace recently released a solo album, by the way, titled Best Bad Girl.
Listen: Doop & the Inside Outlaws - "What Am I Supposed To Do?"
Also playing the Magic Bag that evening: Pat V & the Detroit-3 and Rodney Henry.

Finally - Looking ahead to next week's Trip:
There's a new record store opening soon in downtown Ferndale. Here's a link to a teasing preview. For those of you who miss Record Time (and Hybrid Moments, for that matter), salvation is coming ~ and its name is FOUND SOUND, (inside the former location of Mother Fletchers on Nine Mile).
Look for their doors to be open by early August, if not sooner.
