Ferndale Library Staff Recommends: Kelly D.'s Picks

A series featuring personal picks, insightful titles and reading recommendations from various staff members at the Ferndale Public Library. This week, check out suggestions from one of our newest pages, Kelly Derin.

Kelly started working at the as a high school page/library assistant a little more than a month ago.

She wrote her own bio (below), so I'll let her do the talking. I'll say this, though - she's an avid music fan/listener (and a singer), so listen up when she name-drops a band or two below.

"I have always lived in Ferndale and am glad to call it home," Derin writes. "Soon, I'll be a senior at Royal Oak High School where I am currently the Vice President of our Interact Club, an advocacy group that does humanitarian work such as building communities after natural disasters (as we did down in Alabama last February). I enjoy tea, singing, indie-music and my cats."

Kelly's Picks

by Kelly Derin

Sigur Rós - Valtari
So ethereal; I have shed many a tear listening to Sigur Ros' piano, violin, bowed guitar, drums, bass, etc, all layered to create a sound unlike any other. This album, like their others, is carried by Jónsi's personal, yet strong falsetto voice; stunningly beautiful.

First Aid Kid - Big Black & the Blue
Two sisters, barely older than I am, from Sweden, singing, writing and playing whimsical folk music. Definitely worth a listen.

Flight of the Conchords (TV Series; 2 Seasons)
These subtly hilarious boy-men from New Zealand come to New York to make it big in the music business. It's a bizarre, clever show, with a lot of heart.

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter - by Carson McCullers
McCullers wrote her profound novel at the age of 23, and it's left me pondering society and barely-emotionally-in-tact.

And my last pick would be: the movie-version of
Everything Is Illuminated (DVD).
I feel like I'm connecting with my roots while Elijah Wood's character searches for his own. The soundtrack (featuring Gypsy-punks Gogol Bordello) is excellent as well.
