The wrapped up on Sunday evening after a series of gay pride events that drew thousands of people to the area for marches, rallies, a street festival and more.

"I'm ecstatic," Ferndale Pride director Craig Covey said Sunday during the seven-hour street festival. "It's all about having fun and supporting the businesses and letting people be who they are and enjoy themselves."

"It shows that we are a city that stands up for tolerance," Covey said of the series of events. "If I had one wish it would be that other cities would start to emulate this. It would strengthen their own cities as well."

Covey said this year's Ferndale Pride was three times bigger than last year's and was put on by an "army of volunteers" who spent months planning it.

Ferndale Mayor Dave Coulter, who spoke during the opening ceremony of the street festival, said pride events in Ferndale used to be more about the gay community coming "out of the shadows to be seen and be recognized."

"Now the LGBT community is so integrated into the fabric of Ferndale that I think the reason we do this now is to celebrate how far we've come and how much we've meant to the community," Coulter said.
