Ferndale Girls Soccer Season Ends With 8-0 Loss to Lamphere

Districts end quickly for the Eagles with mercy rule loss early in the second half on Tuesday.

MADISON HEIGHTS - The scoreboard wasn't an indication of how much talent the Ferndale girls varsity soccer team had on the field Tuesday in the opening round of districts, the Eagles just didn't put up much of a fight.

Lamphere scored six goals in the first half and ended Ferndale’s season with an 8-0 mercy rule win.

“Give credit to Lamphere,” Ferndale coach Steven Motter said. “We didn’t have it today.”

The Rams only needed seven minutes to score two goals in the second half to end the game early by the mercy rule. Katlyn Krysiak scored her fourth goal three minutes into the half and then Brianna Smith scored with about 33 minutes left to play to wrap up the win.

Ferndale struggled defensively the entire game, particularly with staying in front of Krysiak. The senior dominated in the open field and used her speed to get past any defender the Eagles threw at her.

She started the game with a goal in the opening minutes and went into halftime with a hat trick.

“In the south Oakland area we have some of the fastest girls on our squad, she’s one of them” Lamphere coach Skip Muhktar said. “Offensively we are the best team Lamphere ever had.”

The Eagles switched goaltenders late in the second half to try and get a spark. Junior Emma Whipple came out of the game for sophomore Meghan Carney, but nothing helped break Lamphere’s momentum. Carney allowed the last three goals.

“I feel really bad for the seniors, we have seven seniors that are leaving,” Motter said. “We have a good core, despite what we showed. This isn’t what we teach or practice.”

It was a disappointing end to a terrible second half of the season for the Eagles, who at one point were sitting near the top of their division with an 8-3 record. The district loss gave them a 1-6-2 record over their last nine games and dropped their overall record down to 9-9-2.

“We got a great group of talented girls, but they just don’t know how to be competitive,” Motter said. “You can’t teach somebody to really want to win, to want to be competitive to want to get bloody, dirty and sweaty. We don’t have that killer instinct.”

Motter hopes the loss gives the girls something to think about over the offseason. Juniors Kelsey Wilson and Lexie Brisson-Fast, two of the squad’s top offensive threats, will be back next year along with both goalies and junior defender Molly Breen-Bondie.

“I hope it makes them hungry, Motter said. “That’s really all I can ask for, when we start conditioning in the winter and they remember what this felt like.”
