Top 10 Reasons This Ferndale Parent Loves Ferndale Schools

Carissa Gaden writes in to tell Ferndale Patch why she sends her kids to Ferndale Schools.

Why I love Ferndale Schools: My personal top 10 list (in no particular order):

  1. That while the marching band has won the state championship six times in seven years, there is no question that the emphasis remains on learning, not winning.
  2. That I know more parents than I can count with skills and education that choose to focus on raising their children rather than climbing the corporate ladder.
  3. My children don't learn diversity from a textbook or school assembly—they live it.
  4. Jazz band and jazz choir as early as middle school.
  5. That it truly doesn't matter to my teenage girls what brand of jeans they're wearing, and the high school student parking lot doesn't have better cars than the teacher lot.
  6. An Open Classroom opportunity that emphasizes self-directed learning and welcomes me as a parent as a valued part of my children's education.
  7. Concerts, musicals and plays are incredible, not a parental chore.
  8. Educators that go the extra mile on a daily basis because they truly care about each child, and the opportunity to know many of them personally as they live in the community.
  9. A myriad of truly challenging and artistically enriching academic choices at the high school level, both through Ferndale High School and CASA (such as intro to college biology, philosophy, Japanese and music theory).
  10. The small-town feel of a community where everyone knows my children and feels some responsibility to look out for them, because this village really acts like a village!

It was hard, by the way, to pick just 10.

I could not have said it better. Thank you Ferndale schools for the excellent education and life experiences you have giving my girls. They would not be the people they are today with out you.

Well said Carissa! Makes me wonder why on Earth people would NOT want to send their kids to Ferndale Schools. Sometimes the grass appears greener on the other side of the fence, but appearances can be deceiving!

Concur 100% with Carissa's top 10 list. Not only did our kids receive a great education, they also had life experiences and built lifelong relationships with teachers and students. They went on to be very successful college students and found that many of the topics covered in college classes were already learmes in high school. The fine arts program is wonderful and begins in elementary
school.

The FESC is an important steward of the City’s environmental values and goals, and its membersRead More have performed valuable education programming and environmental policy support on behalf of all Ferndale residents. It was clear, however, the FESC and the city needed to revisit the mission and vision to make sure the group was focused on activities that could make the greatest impact. I worked with the FESC to brainstorm a new mission and purpose ideas with members and helped rewrite the draft ordinance in a collaborative effort with FESC and city staff. I'm happy to say we've made steady progress; last night the city manager and I met with FESC members to review the new ordinance language, and the group's renewel request will come to council on June 24th. Together, we had a great meeting and I believe FESC members are excited about the clearer alignment between FESC interests and the City’s environmental goals. Yes, it did take a bit longer than anticipated, but in the end I believe we'll have a stronger direction for FESC for years to come.

Here is a great idea: Let's not have the city automatically water its lawns after two days of rain.Read More That would save water, reduce costs, and not contribute to increased storm water runoff.
