As of Thursday, Krause said more than 100 Roosevelt students and their families had signed up to participate and UHS planned to send more than 80 student volunteers.

The activities planned include painting five murals on canvases to be hung around the school. The murals will have themes that revolve around King's teachings, such as peace, sharing and kindness, Krause said. The children will also work on vision boards to get them thinking about their future goals and dreams. A peace quilt is also being put together.

"The students will get pieces of fabric to decorate with their ideas of peace," Krause said. The students will be using fabric markers for the quilt. "The pieces will then be sewn together into three quilts for each school to display," she said.

The activities are designed for elementary students and open to all schools, not just Roosevelt, Krause said. Families can still register Saturday at 12:30 p.m. The activities will begin after Oakland County Commissioner Craig Covey gives a talk to the children about the importance of kindness, peace and sharing.

"This is the first year we've done this," Krause said. "We're looking forward to it."

UHS and LTU will donate books to Roosevelt from book drives held at each school last year.

After the event, pizza and juice will be available to participants.

Last week, students participated in a . The school has 460 students and those in attendance that day walked through the halls holding signs that said "peace," posters that displayed what their dreams were – "My dream is to be a builder," one said – and various other crafts that all had to do with peace and King.

Krause said after the Peace Walk that Martin Luther King Jr. Day is not just one day at Roosevelt.

"We are celebrating Dr. King today, but we teach these aspects of his life every day," Krause said.

Registration starts at 12:30 p.m. Activities start after Covey speaks at 1 p.m.
