Ferndale Patch headed up to Roosevelt Primary for the first day of school. If you have a child going back today, send us your pictures!

After a one-day delay on the start of school here in Ferndale, Roosevelt Primary was ready for classes to be in session as the school's hallways were buzzing with youngsters from kindergarten to third grade, their parents and a helpful administration.

"She was excited, probably up at 4 a.m. this morning waiting for school to start," said Oak Park resident Chris Ferow and father of first grader Grace.

Ferndale Public Schools delayed the start of school due to the aftermath of a storm that blew through the area on Saturday evening, knocking out power to 7,000 Ferndale residents, including FPS buildings.

The storm, with winds clocked at 70 mph, also knocked down several trees and about 80 power lines, according to DTE Energy.

On Tuesday, FPS announced that school would be back in session Wednesday.

"I thought we were having school yesterday," said new first grader Isaiah McHenry.

McHenry's mom, Ursula Scott, had a busy morning in Ferndale, getting five kids ready for school. "I have one at the middle school, two at (Coolidge Intermediate) and two in Roosevelt," she said.

Sever (pronounced Sea-ver) Scott, Isaiah's brother, started the second grade this morning at Roosevelt.

Scott said that preparing for back to school for five kids isn't as difficult as it sounds. "I just start early and get stuff throughout the summer," she said.

Monique Jones' son Amir started first grade Wednesday morning as well.

Amir said his favorite thing about school is recess, but he also loves reading. "I read Star Wars books," he said. "And Sit Down, Dog. I love it."

Jones, who lives in Southfield, said she looked at different kindergartens before settling on Roosevelt. "I went to every kindergarten before I found Roosevelt," she said. "This is an excellent school. The teachers are attentive; they are here for you. The children are comfortable. Everything is well organized."

Ferow, Grace's father, also praises Roosevelt and its staff. "We love Roosevelt. It's been a great school," he said. "We really like the communication with the teachers. There's an open dialogue. And the schools stresses family and that's what you get here."

Sophia Pratt is starting first grade this year. Her father, Scott, said she seemed a little calmer this year than last. "She's starting with the same kids from kindergarten. She knows everyone one. I think she's calmer this year," he said.
